What early advantage did Closed source LLMs have? Was it more a byproduct of Specialization?

What jumps out to me is how stepwise both lines are rather than smooth. It looks less like gradual capability gains and more like punctuated jumps when a new model or release lands. Also interesting that open source keeps closing the gap in bursts instead of steadily lagging. Makes me wonder how much of the perceived gap at any point is just release timing rather than a structural advantage.
