Started the year feeling rather sprightly and then, Trump kidnapped Maduro … Realised that things could get a whole lot worse this year. So I sat down and wrote down some of the dire (and not so dire) 'predictions' that were playing out in my mind. Read it as a piece of speculative fiction.
Curious to see where everyone else is at?
Here are the headings I used – fill in the details in the area(s) you have a strong inkling/intuition about:
1. Geopolitics: We'll witness a changing of guards
2. Tech: The bubble will burst
3. Society: Populists on the left and right will rule
4. Culture: Infantile content will continue to dominate the arts
5. Climate: New extremes most will scarcely care about
My take is here: https://notabenemagazine.substack.com/p/a-year-of-doom-and-gloom-five-dire . Welcome to refute/add to any of my take. Just keep in mind that you are talking to real person so keep the discourse civil.
Five dire predictions for 2026. I've given you the headings. Fill in the details 🙂

1 – Not this year
2 – I don’t think so
3 – It’s possible
4 & 5 – 100%
Why though? Things are bad enough as they stand without ruminating on how it could be even worse.
1. Iran and Venezuela will have fair elections and new governments.
2. Definitely not. AI will give a glimpse of the future this year. We’ll have a glimpse of it’s true capability.
I’d add two things:
– Given how Trump has been trying to exert control over the Federal Reserve, he’ll likely replace Powell with whoever he feels will do as he says. This could lead to out of control inflation.
– If Trump invades Greenland, NATO will collapse and our allies will distance themselves from us even further. Our military will lose support, both domestically and internationally, likely even having our bases closed in some countries.
1. Changing of the guards from what? The two biggest global powers are US and China and that ain’t changing.
2. AI bubble may wobble but won’t burst. The largest companies on earth are betting trillions. They are not stupid.

Very scholarly work, thank you.Â
Didn’t someone write years ago that 2028 is the year the singularity will happen? Seems like we are on pace for that.
