Apparently the article says the wronged man never got to see the money, as he died before the ruling was made. That’s all really unfortunate, I wonder how long this case actually took going through the court.

The 40000€ went to the cat man’s kin since he died before judgment. Also, he had a doctor’s order for sick leave, so I don’t know if the employee admitted to the employer that it was for grieving his cat or what (you don’t have to disclose the reason for sick leave). This is a confusing story even in Finnish.

I can only imagine the strength of Finnish writers’ wrists. Mine would be exhausted from all those umlauts.

Mental health is also health.

Pets are family members and should be treated as such, especially those closely bonded with us like cats and dogs. But there certainly is a “cute” bias in place; meaning if the deceased pet had been e.g. a rat or a bee hive or a tarantula, the ruling might have been different..

I just said I didn’t feel well. Which was completely true. I would have made mistakes and therefore potentially caused problems.

I’m in the UK and recently had time off due to my 17 yr old cat’s passing, I had 2 months sick leave and I was still fully paid and provided a lot of support by my managers.
When it happened I initially tried to go back into work as I thought it wouldn’t be taken seriously and was terrified of losing my job, but I was sent home after they saw me barely functioning and was not rushed into going back in any way.
There are decent employers out there who understand that grief is grief, no matter the source.

What a sad outcome
The man who lost his beloved cat never got to see
the money, as he died before the district court’s ruling was made. The court ordered the money to be paid to the estate

I worked with curmudgeon who didn’t understand how I treasure and value my animals. He said humans are above any animal. He and his wife had a little shihtzu named Gracie. I asked him if Osama Bin Laden and Gracie were both drowning, and he had time to save one of them, who would he pick. A light went on in his eyes and he said, “well, you got me there.”

Based.
I’m barely literate in German and half way decent in English.
Finish just looks like they’re either trying to summon Chtullu or living proof that elves are real.
[Grief over pet death can be as strong as that for family member, survey shows. Researcher calls for guidelines for diagnosing prolonged grief disorder to be expanded to cover people who lose pets](https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2026/jan/15/grief-pet-death-family-member-survey)

Let’s be honest, this is stupid.
