All the mining industry costs us is a little bit of land… Plus more frequent floods, fires, cyclones, higher insurances and lower property values. Oh, and a liveable planet.
This is a real rocks for brains campaign from QRC: https://www.lboq.org/

They’re also contributing to these heatwaves that feel never ending.
I don’t understand your statement. Truth compared to the endless bullshit pouring from the greenies.
0.1% of the state’s land is still a huge area. That includes new land clearing, fragmentation of forests and woodlands for gas wells, and displacement of threatened species necessitating dubiously effective environmental offsets. They’re framing the issues with resource extraction as purely a land and space issue, which is reductive as your post points out. Typical greenwashing.
“Funds hospitals, schools, roads and jobs”
If we taxed them properly they would and our bills wouldn’t be sky rocketing…
How much of the damage to GBB do they contribute to?
Also… they take 100% of the states non-renewable resources, so like… fucking pay the state cunts.
> Operates on 0.1% of the state’s land, with strict environmental standards and progressive rehabilitation built into every project.
For real? Queensland the open cut coal mining capital that consumes huge amounts of water, land clears the hell out of our environment and produces huge amounts of methane which supercharge climate change in the short term??
When you actually consider the externalities of coal mining, grazing and land conservation – coal mining in Queensland is the least valuable for our state. Source: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S030142072100026X
This is the, “he only hits me while he’s drinking”, equivalent from the government.
Yes it does help fund those things, if we keep our resources tax in place. Their argument that it funds those things so we should lift the tax is nonsense.
FFS. China mines over TWENTY times as much coal as QLD. It builds over 50 new coal power stations every year.
But according to Reddit the “evil” LNP is the cause of every problem in the world.
Downvote to your heart’s content.
Coincidentally non-mining states public hospital pays are rather poor. You only need to look south. The pay difference between Tweed Head and Robina can be as high as 30%+ for same amount of work done (due to other not publicized subsidies/agreements, so don’t just blindly look at pay rates that is published).
The richest is still Western Australia though.
Sounds amazing.
They’ll be ok with royalties being increased then.
BHP:
“Queensland coal division earnings slumped 63% despite stable coal prices.
Higher royalty taxes blamed for the decline, with an effective tax rate of 62%.”
Sold two mines to Whitehaven and more mines to Stanmore coal and people still think coal mines don’t pay enough tax. lol I’d get out of coal in QLD too which all the major mining companies are. RIO Tinto was the smartest to sell out of coal completely last decade.
I’ll be honest, it’s actually fairly accurate that a large part of our country’s wealth is from mining and housing investment. Without it, Australia would be a fairly tough place to live. Don’t be mad at them for existing, be mad at the government for not properly taxing these entities and also allowing foreign entities extract a large amount of the wealth we would gain.
FYI the value of Queensland mineral exports is around $100B, so the royalties equate to 7.8% tax.
They used to fund more when they were forced to pay royalties.
I have no trust in the current qld government
Why do you think this is a rocks for brains campaign? I would be willing to bet it is extremely successful, campaigns like this literally got the LNP voted into government.
Australia makes a lot of money from resources but most of that is private. The resource companies pay fuck all tax and they should pay a lot more.
