Didn’t school start this week in Sydney? If they’re 16 and 17 – shouldn’t they have been in school? Also, is it common for parents to let their 16 and 17yos go camping alone for 3 days?
How did they end up separated? I’ve hiked and area and it was isolated and gruelling to say the least.
What I find disturbing is that a ~~17~~ 16 y/o died after just one day of separation, in summer. I’m thinking the cause of death must be an additional circumstance, like a fall, drowning, snake bite or getting trapped in a wet canyon at night.
Always carry a PLB. You can even rent them from Macpac.

Speculation but it would be easy to become disorientated from dehydration and fall developing a head injury.
