  1. Finally, there are so many adults out there that cannot afford the current pathways for diagnosis. An adhd isn’t nearly as complicated as autism to diagnose

I just don’t understand why my diagnoses in both NZ and QLD don’t mean shit here when it’s the same regulatory body.

  3. I cancelled my ADHD assessment last week purely because of cost. $950 and that’s with the Medicare rebate included. So this gives me hope

  4. Thank fuck. Seeing a shrink is so long winded and expensive.

Late stage capitalism (yeh I’m gonna go there soz) has pushed us all into ever smaller boxes such that fewer and fewer of us can fit properly into them anymore. Our natural differences (diversity!) now affect our material circumstances – our ability to pay ever higher rents and buy ever more expensive food.

So I guess more of us are having to reconcile with the fact that we have ADHD to varying degrees.

Thank FUCK. I feel thankful my GP has been always great with my ADHD shit, I just wish it didn’t take $$$$ that took until my late 20s (because surprise surprise ADHD made it nearly impossible to hold down a job) to actually have, to get to that point.

I’m mostly glad because I’m an adult with stable, long-diagnosed ADHD (and depression, but whatever) and my psych is more than happy to have my GP prescribe my Ritalin but every 2 years I have to have a consult, pay hundreds of dollars, take half a day off work, speak to him for 5 minutes and say yep, same same, so he can re-prescribe my Ritalin and sign the permit over to my GP who prescribes my SNRI and whatever else I have needed for years and years.

For stable, regular folks this is great. Hopefully it means I don’t have to pay the hundreds to see my psych with no update, then more to see the GP again to get the actual permit because GPs hardly bulk bill anymore, just to get the same drugs I always get an is a fortune for anyway.

I was high functioning adhd for much of my life, finally diagnosed in the last year and the medication has made a HUGE difference to my life – promotion at work, lost my social anxiety, able to task switch and motivate to start and stop tasks appropriately. I would love to be able to have my kids screened/assessed without paying thousands and taking months and months!

  8. I didn’t read to the bottom of the article but I assume this is great news for me and my people!

Also, just because people will lurk this in future: I have found Doctors of Northcote to be excellent for an ADHD-friendly GP experience.

  9. Finally!!! Shame it wont come into effect before my next 2 yearly review with my psych in March which is $750………. but hopefully this will be the last one, the current system has so many obstacles and systems that almost feel like they are there specifically to make it as difficult as possible for people with executive functioning challenges to access treatment……

  10. Good. Seems like a ton of psychiatrists have made the process as long and complicated as possible in order to justify the ridiculous cost of diagnosis.

Does this mean GP’s can prescribe ADHD meds and if so when will they be able to?

Unpopular opinion: This will lead to an over diagnosis of ADHD due to the ADHD as an identity crowd, medicalizing normal and predictable behavioural environmental cues.

Think, is it ADHD or the structures in your life and predictable reward of short term attention trapping technology and marketing which we are all bombarded with on the daily.

  13. Yet we have some idiots bitching that GPs have enough to do and what about drug chasers. Yeah, let’s look at the huge benefits for both GPs who, know, what they are seeing and the people who need diagnosing and may not have the money for specialists and the bullshit they do.

  14. Finally, this idea was originally put forward in vic and got approved in every state before us 🙄

Awesome. I shouldn’t have to pay over $500 a year just to have adhd.

Initial reviews I can justify that they need to pay for the time and report ( still way overpriced though) but, it’s a slap in the face to have to pay psychiatrists thousands every two years when your permit expires. I had to recently pay $1100 and that was the review piece. It’s ridiculous.

Fortunately the cheap stuff works for me but for my mates, vyvanse is still $30 a bottle. So another $360 a year.

Oh and the ndis is near impossible to access with adhd too.

But yeah keep telling us it’s a trend.
