Softening us up to scale it back with fewer events, which might mean not having to build some venues.

  2. We’re 6 years away and so far, we’ve built or planned just about nothing. Looks promising. Brisbane Olympics will be comprised of AFL, NRL, soccer, cricket, and maybe some swimming events in the Brisbane River (outrun the bull sharks maybe?). Could probably have beach volleyball at south bank too!

  3. Ok, so what sports are on the chopping block? Most of the track and field will be safe, as will swimming, gymnastics and golf (course is already preparing). Perhaps some “niche” events that require separate infrastructure AND don’t have medal prospects for the Aussie team. So maybe archery, shooting or even rowing? Would be a damn shame if we do have to cut events, a real blight on the AOC and Queensland Government.

  4. Where will they do all the horsey stuff? Australia is good at three day eventing, but does Queensland still have an international three day event course? I think the only one left is on a private property on the GC.

London ran their event in Greenwich park & Paris at the Palace of Versailles so ideally you’re looking for a nice big park to take over for a few months.

The closer we come to the Olympics, the more I hate Anastasia Paluszek for leaving us with this burden.

All countries which hosted the Olympics in the last 50 years, including the Sydney 2000 games, lost money for that nation. The only Olympics that were profitable in the last 50 years was Los Angeles in 1984, because it had a large portion of the facilities already built. By that logic, Melbourne would make more sense as an “El Cheapo” Olympic host. But if they were unwilling to host even the Commonwealth Games, it says a lot about the expectation of how financially burdensome a multi – sport event will be.

It’s even more disheartening to think that we effectively had 10 years to plan and build facilities for this event, yet the last 4 or years has been spent thumb twidling.

And if you’re a sports fanatic who’s going to try and come up with some convoluted reason/s as to why this will be beneficial, don’t bother. We’re already seeing property prices rise like crazy, and I cannot see how spending $15 billion+ on sports facilities for a two week event, just so that you watch live Fencing and Handball events, is a wise investment.

    So long horse dancing!
    Tata and farewell to sailing!

    Olympics improved

  7. Can all Australians agree that we should never bother with the Olympics or commonwealth games ever again? They’re both lame as fuck as cost the taxpayer a shitload. Fuck em off for all time. Add it to the constitution
