Link above is to a recent US Saturday Night Live sketch that depicts a "Finnish immigrant father" by Swedish actor Alexander Skarsgaard.

Apparently even touching knees in a sauna is too affectionate.

Is this sketch offensive to Finnish folks?

I am related to the US Michigan Upper Peninsula Folks (I live in Illinois). I’m excited to see "Available" on US tv ever, but that seems bad….

Is this offensive to native Finns?

    1. My impression is that people are more concerned about Swedes playing Finns than about the content of the sketch…

It wasn’t racist, nor was it funny. I mean why would we dress like north korea’s leader

    3. Most Finns aren’t professional offendees.

Edit: Oops. I guess that’s a generalisation. Most *sensible* Finns I mean.

People I’ve spoken to here find it funny. It’s just a shame that it takes a Swede to get Finnish representation on American TV…

I doubt it. SNL is all about sketches.

You might want to look at “World’s Most Evil Invention”,  or “Meet Your Second Wife”, or “Teacher Trail” (2 sketches) from SNL. There might be more but I remember these well.

Offensive is that they pronounce Heikki as Haiki and sauna as soona and Heikki has Swedish rather than Finnish accent.

    7. Nah dude, it’s a joke.

Besides it’s crazy to even think about sitting so close to someone you risk touching knees.

    8. Offensive? Nah. The accent is all wrong, and it’s not particularly funny to me, but that just means it’s meh as far comedy goes. But I’m probably not the target audience, anyway.

I’m just glad that Alexander Skarsgård – being a Swede – is smart enough to know the difference between Sweden and Finland. An insult that gets the basics right is funny, but an amateurish insult would have been insulting.

This is peak humor and i love it. Hate it when people take shit too seriously and get offended by stuff like this.

    11. It’s a bit like “Finnish” characters on other shows like Veep or Shoresy. They always find someone not Finnish to play a Finn, and they adopt some weird quasi-Scandinavian accent. People who are not Finns may like the character, but to a Finn it just breaks the immersion immediately because that character is clearly not a Finn. It kind of ruins some of the fun.
