Clearly took a very long route. You can see on image.
Tried to take cash for way more than the meter.
Finally agreed to take the meter charge but used his personal device instead of POS.
Double charged me on the POS.
The experience sucks for a tourist here thanks to such scammers. I tried reporting on btaxi and also 153 but am having trouble reaching them and explaining in English.

  1. sorry for your experience, anyone should NEVER use taxi in Istanbul, most Turkish people use “Martı TAG”, which is similar to how Uber works in the US, to avoid getting scammed.

I thought Turkish taxi drivers internationally well know for being scammers. Well ,try using public transportation or Martı tag app.

I am not a taxi driver but after seeing time of your trip and knowing the traffic on perşembe pazarı and karaköy, he might have seen less traffic on that route. But high chance he scammed you for extra 5 usd, which not worth the effort. Next time open gogle maps and check the route and traffic.

  5. It might not be the long route if the traffic is considered. In Istanbul, the fastest way to go from A to B is usually through an irrelevant point C. And this does not seem so out of touch. Given the direct route would go from heavy traffic areas like Taksim, Osmanbey, Mecidiyeköy or alternatively Perşembe Pazarı, Karaköy, Kabataş, Beşiktaş and at a time around when they are the most jammed – evening traffic lasts quite long in these routes.

Even in this route -through Bomonti Dolmabahçe Tunnel- you probably went through heavy traffic from Dolmabahçe onwards.

The best way would be to take a tram to Kabataş and then use funicular and metro to Gayrettepe, or go from Tünel to Şişhane metro in this traffic.

İt’s a problem on website. But don’t worry I will a make a compliment about what happened. I’m gonna follow this issue. I will try tomorrow again. Don’t worry.

Use Yandex Go, Uber or Martı Tag. They can’t scam you through those apps and they are cheaper than regular taxi.

Edit: Those apps also show you the closest price you’ll pay as well as the route that’ll be taken. If driver changes the route without giving you an explanation or asking you first, you can also report it in those apps.

  8. Chill bro. I can’t say anything about payment problems but, the route is not that bad. He used the tunnel to extend the route a bit but probably you had way less traffic that direction. You could have paid more at traffic jams through the direct route. I think the driver saved you and himself some time, and money. Next time use the metro and tram which will be faster than the cab at a fraction of the cost. Istanbul is not flat like European or American cities. It has hills, sea, and valleys. This geography makes choke points for traffic Direct route is not always the fastest and cheapest.
