In the presence of the US vice president, local fans present at the opening ceremony at Milan Cortina expressed their displeasure with America on Friday.

In an undeniable sign of America’s rapidly deteriorating image in Europe, the US delegation entered the San Siro stadium on Friday night to boos and whistles from the 65,000-plus crowd. The boos intensified when Vice President JD Vance appeared on the big screen during Team USA’s arrival.

The only other team to receive similar treatment was Israel.

Olympic organizers had prepared for the possibility of anti-American sentiment in the stadium. There had already been small protests on the streets of Milan against the planned presence of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in the city. Asked before the Games how the Americans might be received, IOC president Kirsty Coventry said she hoped the event would be “seen by everyone as an opportunity to show respect”.

Those are not cheers🤭”.
