I wonder whether there’s a way for Canada to be some form of “associate member” without requiring full integration?

Would be fucking funny if Canada joined the european union. It would be even more funny if states like Minnesota left USA and joined EU along with Canada

  3. This is their long term strategy all aimed at being part of the Eurovision song contest. Joke’s on you Canada, if you win it you have to host it suckers!

  4. Nah, Canada is not in Europe. Although it is a very cherished ally and we are close. That’s enough.

We can swap them for Hungary.

Americans would love to have the fascist Orbán and his people beside them.

Win win, EU gets a progressive, humane country like Canada instead.

  6. lol no 🤪

A close partnership would be good and achievable. EU membership can´t even be on the table until Canad has sorted out things internally. Their own internal market is a mess and their economy is intertwined with that of the US.

  7. If usa, china and Russia wants to dominate parts if the world, it makes perfect sense for the EU to break free from such dominance.

Come along Canada. This Dane invites you in.

I approve. What do you think we should name it? CanEu, pronounced “canoe” 😉 but seriously, it’s great idea to integrate closely as possible when US obviously has a mad king and runs straight into the abyss.

  9. A lot of this talk is just silly. Canada will not be joining the EU and it will not be the 51st state. Canada will be Canada.

Its currently a trend in Canada to diversify trade (mainly towards Europe and Asia), this is good, and this will continue. But in the long-run, Canada’s economy will still remain heavily heavily integrated with the US economy and the US will remain Canada’s dominant import/export partner.

Canada joining the EU would be extremely expensive and disruptive towards the Canadian economy which is essentially designed to export to the US market.

Or they could throw a complete curveball and choose neither and instead convincing Britain and Australia and New Zealand to form CANZUK… 🙂

I am all for closer ties and cooperation with Canada, military and economically. With figures like the orange Mussolini in the white house we should support each other in every way possible. But I think we need to do some restructuring of our union before looking to expand, certainly before expanding so far outside of our own continent, if that’s something we should do at all (probably not).

  12. Canada will never join the EU. It would buckle under the regulations and would eventually get annoyed at taking orders from Brussels. It would also cripple trade with the US due to said regulations.

  13. It is possible to get much, much closer with Canada in terms of the EU-Canada relationship, without having Canada join the EU. We could essentially include them in the free-trade and movement area, like how Norway is part of the EEA but not EU.

Let’s start there instead of going straight to a long-distance marriage. Not saying I wouldn’t want them in the EU, but let’s start with what makes sense. Tighten our relationship.

As a Canadian, I’m game. I’d love to hop over to France or Germany without my passport, and take advantage of the pro-consumer policies.

  15. Stop with this absurd nonsense. As great as Canada is, its should not join the EU. The EU is not some loose trade agreement like NAFTA or CUSMA that you can join just for vibes. It is a political entity with its own laws, parliament, currency and geopolitical interests. It makes 0 sense for Canada to join. The EU should represent Europe, not be some random collection of countries around the world.

These articles are ridiculous. Canada is not in Europe, nor even adjacent… It is separated by an ocean. These articles are not serious, valuable, or interesting.

The EU is fundamentally an economic system based on the Euro currency. Canada will not be integrating into the Euro system nor would that be desirable for the EU.

Stop wasting time on weird fantasies and focus where it’s needed.
