  1. Not only defeats, it seems to be around a 70-30 split. Absolutely destroyed the wannabe dictator.

I wish they stopped using socialist to describe PS even though it’s obviously in PS’ name.

It doesn’t do anyone any favours and it is misleading. Especially when it’s a guy in the most centrist faction of PS.

PS is Portugal’s mainstream Social Democratic Party and that’s it.

Just say “social democrat defeats far-right candidate”.

  3. Portuguese people are still decent in general. Really good to see these results! Really good to actually check that the number of votes for this idiotic party is slowly going down

How depressing fascists or socialists both are oppressive in their own way what happened to Liberalism?

Two small contributions to the discussion from me:

    – In almost all European lands, far-right / populist fascism is about 1/4 – 1/3 of the population. That’s about all they can get, because the rest of the population is educated and has common sense. If the rest of the political forces are divided, the far-right gets a chance to rule by forming a coalition. Else, they won’t manage.

    – Far right populism only offers scapegoats and hate. They will never offer a solution to any problem. Because of that, they quickly dissapoint their voters and tend to collapse after some time in power. Therefore, for every wannabe dictator that comes to power in a country, another will fall in another. Babis rose to power in Czech, Widers lost in Netherlands. They didn’t make it in Romania or Portugal, but Le Pen may succeed in France, but then again, Orban will lose in Hungary. Eventually, every country will have its turn to try the nationalist – populist stupidity. The important thing is that Europe advances – even slowly

Literally the Portuguese version of Ion Iliescu vs Corneliu Vadim Tudor. Except this guy didn’t beat ppl up with miners.

    Great job Portugal 👏

  7. Correct headline: tactical voting amongst most parties, from socialists to conservatives, was necessary to defeat far-right.

Conclusion: far right has more support than any other single party.

Luckily for our _amigos lusos_ most voters put their differences aside to avoid farright taking the top seat.

  8. It it not a right candidate. It is a populist candidate. The right electorate voted against a populist irresponsible candidate

  9. This guy is a socialist as much as the DDR was democratic. Portugal is in a lot of shit, I fell in love with the country 20 years ago and, unfortunately, I no longer visit. I do follow the political life, tho, I even made plans living there on a later stage of my life.

Every sensible Portuguese knows my reasons. This guy is not the solution to them.

  10. Wasn’t this basically what the polling had already been predicting? As far as I can tell it wasn’t like there was ever any real expectation that the outcome would turn out different than it did

The far right has still been gaining a lot of popularity in recent years though. They went from 1.3%, to 7.2%, to 18.1%, to 22.8% of the vote in the legislative elections that’s taken place since 2019

And now Ventura got 33% of the vote in the presidential election

Like, you don’t have to be a math expert to see a clear trendline here

Now let us be clear: this wasn’t a sOcIALIsT win.

Firs, PS isn’t socialist. They’re lobby sellouts that F common people’s lifes over for the highest bidder.

    This was a PEOPLE’S WIN.

As soon as you spin this as “socialist win” instead of “saying no to fascists” you’re doing us a HUGE disservice. PS lost a lot in the last elections BECAUSE OF WHAT THEY DID. They’re not beloved nor welcomed nor anything.

PS (the sOCIaLisTs that f*cked Seguro over so that Costa could win) didn’t win anything tonight!!!
Seguro got payback from being backstabbed by them over a decade ago (although it could’ve been basically anyone else in his place tbh).

And the people won by giving a massive middle finger to the dictator lover. This is OUR/THE POPULATION’s win!

**F*ck Ventura AND F*ck PS. Equally** . The later are the ones that exploit the most vulnerable and basically put another transatlantic slave trade in action to feed their lobbyist friends and themselves!! They’re not any better than Ventura and Chega.
