He had a “valid work permit” for two decades? How does that work.

And how do you live somewhere for twenty years, marry a citizen and still not bother to get citizenship for yourself.

  2. What do we do when we realize that they have been nasty with those camps?
A firestorm over Houston or what?

  3. He lived and worked for 20 years and applied for a green card a work visa last year? Things don’t add up, many questions could be asked, but wasn’t.

  4. The surprise here is that this dude is white and a native English speaker from EUROPE (yes, ICE and the current government are just a gang of racists), and still ICE detained him and subjected him to the same inhumane treatment that all the other detainees. Nobody is safe in the US these days.

Do someone has a feedback over the other cases?

Can ICE does that stuff or can this people at least get a compensation?

  6. And the Irish PM is going to the Whitehouse on St Patrick’s Day and will no doubt say nothing.

  7. FYI: in the US a work permit does NOT grant legal immigration status. Work permits are issued generally for 3 or 5 years and require that you maintain legal immigration status.

You can have a valid work permit, and be an illegal immigrant at the same time; which is what happened here.

  8. I’m too afraid to visit the US nowadays even as a tourist. ICE agents apparently receive little to no training and judging by JD Vance’s attitude, anti-Europeism seems to be a real thing. In this case, why hasn’t the Irish governement or the EU done anything for this guy?!

  9. The concentration camp owners are making a lot of money out of their prisoners. There is no incentive to let them out.

  10. I recommend everyone to not just react to the headline but read the entire article. He has lived in the US for more than 20 years, runs a business, and has a valid work permit issued as part of an application for a green card. He is also married to an American woman.

The most disturbing part of this story, besides the horrible conditions of his confinement, is that ICE claims he agreed to be deported and signed the papers. The guy says that he did not sign it and that the signature is not his.

  11. I’ve actually came across a social media post (like two days ago?) from a guy from my country (Czechia) who claimed he has been detained by ICE for 2 months and allegedly “almost died” because he has asthma and he was forced to stay in a small moldy room without windows with like 47 other people. Crazy. After hearing such stories, I would think twice about traveling to America.

I hope everyone here sees the comments defending ICE’s actions and realizes that fascist and authoritarian sentiments are on the rise and need to be dealt with everywhere, not just in the States. Democracy is never guaranteed.

Probably taken by someone with a thicker foreign accent than he (Yes, ICE is loaded with foreigners)

  14. All the people saying it’s safe to come here and spend if you’re white very quiet all the sudden…

He isn’t the first Irish (and/or white) immigrant to get sent to detention hell, either.

  15. Not the only case, there are a couple more I’ve read about in the media and probably tens of thousands who we’ll never hear about.

I know someone whose family (from the Philippines) went on holiday to Chicago. She hasn’t heard from them since. It’s unknown if they are even alive..

  16. Be sure to book your travel for the World Cup matches stateside.

    What could possibly go wrong?

  17. And Ireland will do nothing. If China had kidnapped a European citizen and kept them a secret prison for 5 months it would dominate the news cycle.
