And the Europeans simply let it happen and don’t intervene at all when their imminent neighbor, one of them, is being carved up between the Russians and their assets in the US.

    How pathetic and weak

  2. Plebiscits under bombing and when part of population is kept in orcish prisons, under occupation or 6 feet under? Sure that will earn the Cheeto the Nobel prize. Or new play pretend FIFA prize.

  3. So the Russo-Usain axis was able to force Ukraine into submission… I am sure Putin won’t do something as despicable as specifically bombing areas with the most pro-ukrainian stance in order to prevent them to go to the polling stations.

As an European, I am ashamed we weren’t able to support Ukraine more.

  4. The detail on the peace deal will be crucial really. As long as it enables the unoccupied parts of Ukraine to remain adequately defended against renewed Russian aggression then I think it will probably be acceptable.

  5. The only reason Zelensky has to put up with Trump so much is because they are the only agent that’s working on a deal. The fact that Europe just let it happen is shameful. If Zelensky didn’t think that US support is critical, and that he could do it with Europe alone, he would’ve already ditched him.

Adding to that: yesterday, Kremlin Foreign Minister Lavrov stated that no one had provided Russia with the draft 20-point peace agreement that Ukraine, the EU, and the US had been working on over the past month—and that Moscow is operating on the basis of the original 28-point framework agreed with Washington last year.

In other words, classic Byzantine tactics: Russia will later claim it was operating from a completely different document, and whatever Ukraine does under U.S. pressure—well, that’s their problem, not Russia’s.

  7. >Trump seeks to shift his focus from international issues to domestic affairs

Trump seeks to realign and the US with Russia and reward Putin for his war. That faster that can happen for Trump, the better from his PoV

  8. Doesn’t matter, Russia will never accept the peace deal even if Ukraine votes to accept it (they probably won’t though) so it’s all just for show.

Some bots all over reddit have been throwing this news. Have already denied that he said that. russian disinformation is pushing a new narrative.

  10. Lot of people saying stupid shit in the comments. This does not mean Russia is going to win.

    >The logistics of holding a presidential election in Ukraine at such short notice **are likely to prove extremely challenging**, however, as the country’s constitution does not allow the holding of elections under martial law — which was declared in Ukraine on 24 February 2022 — and so **would require passing a constitutional amendment.**

    >**The plan is also contingent on whether Zelensky is able to secure a “peace deal that he believes is fair and tolerable to Ukrainians”,** the FT stressed.

    >The election and referendum **could also be delayed if Russia “escalates its attacks on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure and ground offensive in the southeast”,** the FT said, while the issue of who will ultimately control Donbas and the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant **also remains a significant obstacle to peace.**

I swear none of you read articles. This is reliant on the people of Ukraine voting on it.

  11. The fact that people are all “this is Europe’s fault!” is very telling of why there is no unity in Europe. Here’s a wild idea, maybe blame USA for voting in a dictator and giving him unlimited power? And if you insist on shifting blame on Europe, at least try to explain what specific things should European countries (and which countries specifically) could have made to avoid this?

And after that take a deep breath and consider for one second in your social media ruined attention span that Russia will never accept a peace deal that allows Ukraine to maintain and rebuild it’s standing army, nor will Ukraine ever vote for a deal that doesn’t allow the same. So it’s all for show. Now relax, and worry about real things in life, of which there are plenty.

  12. Has there been any confirmation about it or our we taking the Financial Times at their word? Plus, is it against Ukraine’s constitution to hold elections during wartime?

  13. I hope this will prove a hoax.

Giving the enemy a chance to literally bomb your election sounds like a particularly bad idea.

  14. would such election and referendum be even constitutional when lots of UA citizens are in the temporary occupied areas like Crimea and Donbas, where, i assume, orks wont allow for the election and referendum to be held?

  15. Of course there’ll be elections after peace is achieved, that’s not even news.

Good luck on the referendum though, Russia is known to love those.

I wonder how they will handle voting for people residing outside Ukraine, especially Russia.

  17. US pressure right after Lavrov complained that the MAGA cult is taking too long with forcing Ukraine to surrender? 😀

  18. WinningTheSpaceRace on

How does anyone police the fairness of a referendum of those under Russian occupation?

    Honestly, fuck America.

  19. Forced to announce*

Sure, Ukrainians will choose a new president after the war, but during?

5 million Ukrainians aren’t in the country, maybe a million at the front,…

The website has no option to deny all cookies, which is also illegal in eu by law. Maybe try finding a better article

  21. It’s not going to happen.
This is just talk for the sake of keeping the peace “negotiations” going and keeping Trump happy. A reasonable window of opportunity for real peace negotiations will happen once Putin realizes the deep economic hole he’s dug himself into.

  22. Dangerous-Ad-1298 on

but this is against Ukrainian constitution and surely Russia will influence and destabilise the election, just like in the US

  23. In the End, only what Ukraine and its people decide is what matters. If they want to appease the US, we can’t and won’t stop them, they are a sovereign nation.

I will say, since Trump took office, European support to Ukraine has been bigger then US support, turning your back on the EU in favor of Trump is a gamble. But if they think it is worth it, then we have to respect their decision.

  24. I’ve known one Ukranian bloke in my life. I made the mistake of referring to him as Russian one day.

Judging by my sample size of one, you can run all the referendums you want. The Ukranian people will not give an inch to the Russians.

  25. This is an impossible scenario. The East is occupied, several million are abroad and the rest are struggling not to freeze.

And how could these elections be monitored? Because nobody accepts the results of the Crimea “referendum” with 200% of inhabitants voting to be part of Russia.

  26. Once the US and their ally Russia have perfected their meddling game, they will apply their new skills to Canada.

  27. Accomplished_Dirt722 on

Nothing says ‘homegrown democracy’ like syncing your election plans to U.S. midterms.

  28. The only think Moscow doesn’t suck at is election interference. Kyiv needs to proceed with extreme caution

  29. The Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta is lying! Zelensky did not announce elections! All that was said was that IF a peace agreement and security guarantees from the US were signed, then elections would be held in Ukraine. Without a ceasefire, elections are IMPOSSIBLE! Don’t believe Novaya Gazeta – they are lying!
