I mean… i agree free transport would be dope. We have money given away to big biz by the way of tax breaks etc that would cover the cost but I feel it ranks lower to healthcare housing and education for me personally.
Can they use opal cards to track people above and beyond logging usage?
Also the pic makes it look like… and anti smooching logo or something lol.

When you tap on but can’t tap off because the machines are shut. Then you just get charged the max fair and making a claim is like pulling teeth

I’ve heard (don’t cite me) that it costs more to maintain the opal system/enforce fare payment than they actually make in fares. Other countries have free public transport, we know it can work and it would do so much to reduce traffic, make urban centres walkable and rejuvenate Sydney’s abysmal night life. Why wouldn’t we do it?

Had to catch a bus recently. The first time in a very long time. Wouldn’t accept cash. Same with train and unmanned station. It is a joke.
Forgotten_Lie on
Even if transport becomes free maintaining a system of tapping on/off with Opal is still essential for tracking the information needed to make bus and train routes suited to passenger needs. Without something like Opal you can’t determine if people getting on at Stop A and off at Stop B are then taking buses to Stop C such Bus AB is aligned on the timetable with Bus BC as opposed to Bus BD.

Nothing is ever free. “Free PT” will have the missing revenue coming from somewhere else.

I had an old uni mate that thought like this. They always used the adult opal card because they figured if you can buy it in a store and never link it to a card, it couldn’t be used to track you. They gave up the half priced concession fares because they didn’t wanna provide their uni email address. They only ever used PT to travel to and from uni anyway…

Yes to free transport. We generate the money here to do it already, only right now we let that money flow to shareholders instead of the public.

PSA if you’re a veteran in NSW and have a white or gold card and at least 10 points you can get free PT.
The NSW Greens are campaigning for 50c transport. If the Liberals can even provide this in Queensland then why can’t we have it here? [https://www.kobishetty.org.au/50c_public_transport_fares](https://www.kobishetty.org.au/50c_public_transport_fares)

Transport NSW should copy Queensland’s Translink and introduce 50¢ fares for public transport. It’s a nominal fee just to get the passenger statistics that they need to make sure they’re meeting demand. The goal should absolutely be to strongly incentivise public transport over driving. The current fare structure often makes it cheaper to drive, especially when travelling as a family or group.

Yes everything should be free for everyone at all times.

I actually really liked the system in Berlin. There are no ticket gates, it’s a trust system. You buy a pass for a period of time in different zones (like a 3 day pass for zone 3). They have enforcement officers and high fines if you don’t have a ticket. It’s really quite liberating not having to worry about tapping on or off.
Wonderor on
The Opal system is miles better than other systems…. being able to use a debit/credit card or a phone to pay / being able to set up an automatic top up etc is flipping awesome.
Better as a ticketing system than what is in place in Tokoyo / Osaka / Seoul / Paris / Rome and a whole bunch of other cities.

I once had an uber driver from bondi worried about tracking and how he stays away from it all and has even stayed away from vaccines. His mind was blown when I told him I was tracking him on the way to me and I knew where he was and how far away he was.

Lmao people in this thread really love licking the boot of a system that’s putting downward pressure on their necks. Why couldn’t we have nice things? Oh, it would require making those with more pay their fair share? Better poo-poo any semblance of betterment then.

Life is hard enough for those of us who can’t drive, why do these entitled wankers wanna make life harder by whinging about an awesome system? Become minister for transport and actually do something, or learn to drive, or if you want free shit get a sugar daddy/mummy.
