The huntsman isn’t dead. It’s going to spend the rest of its life paralysed and acting as an incubator for the wasp’s babies, until they finally hatch and eat it from the inside out.

You’ve got yourself a spider hunting wasp doing its thing. Paralyses spiders, takes it to a hole, lays eggs on it, and it’s babies eat the spider alive.
They paralyse the spider, then drag it backwards to their burrow (which can be hundreds of metres away), as ‘live’ food for their larvae.
I’ve seen one almost succeed at dragging a full grown huntsman, vertically up a glass window. Tenacious little bastards.

Huntsman wasps (primarily from the Pompilidae family, such as Cryptocheilus bicolor) are specialized, often orange-and-black, predatory insects that hunt huntsman spiders to feed their larvae. The female wasp paralyzes the spider with a sting, drags it to a burrow, and lays an egg on it, allowing the larva to eat the live spider.

This wasp is pretty much why I’m an atheist

Fun fact: spider wasps deliver one of the most painful stings in the animal kingdom.
Aka Tarantula Hawk, look for the video of Coyote Peterson stinging himself with one.
Fortunately very docile to humans and takes a lot of provoking to get stung.

Well that explains what the weird insect we found in our kitchen earlier today was. When should we expect the babies to hatch?
