Does it bother anyone else the amount of litter, particularly glass bottles that are found in cities? I understand that sometimes plastics and papers get carried away by the wind but the amount of glass present is ridiculous.

It seems like Polish people take great pride in the low crime levels but turn a blind eye to littering. I’ve heard people claim that Poland is one of the cleanest countries in Europe but the litter and smog take away so much from the experience.

Also what’s the deal with dog poop? No one seems to pick it up, even when it’s in high traffic areas like side walks. It can be quite frustrating in cities where it seems like every third person has a dog. If one in three people pooped outside there would be outrage but dogs and their owners get a pass.

Yes. It bothers me *a lot*. To the point where I pick up litter in my free time. And it’s disheartening to go to an area I cleaned a day later and see it trashed again. But alas, I continue.

It pisses me off so much. At there is even more of it in the city center, it’s disgusting.

  3. Poland is European mid-table when it comes to littering, but it’s certainly not entirely worthy of the “it’s so clean!” gushing that’s all over the internet

  4. Would anybody be in favor of a deposit system for the little vodka bottles? It would discourage people from littering and encourage the less fortunate to pick up litter and return the bottles for the deposit.

  5. For me it’s a dog shit when it gets above 0° outside. As a dog owner myself I can’t stand people who don’t pick up after their own pets. Ffs

I used to clean up bottles of vodka and beer (Kraków) until one day a contractor cut down all the trees, put up a car park and office building in one place near to me. I felt like I wasted hours of my time and did them a favour not the city and passer-bys.

Anyway yes I come from the UK and while drinking is still an issue most of the bottles are discarded inside the establishment they were bought in. UK doesn’t really get a 4-5 men in their 40’s standing around a tree complaining about their home life and discussing football. They do it at the pub. It’s one of the few things I dislike about PL, that and the amount of remonty neighbours have.

  7. Well, that’s just average Katowice for you 🙁
Bottles, bags, boxes and all of other litter imaginable just getting stuck on every bush you can see. And the dog poop is just sickening. Especially this time of the year. Like I get that is as VERY cold not that long ago and now all the “snow” (ash – courtesy of every goddamn city around) is melted and the poop is just showing up like mushrooms, just bcs some asshat couldn’t bare getting his hand out of his pocket on -10° weather..

  8. It’s ALL over… I’ve even seen people have been throwing thrashes far in the woods, tyres, bottles, plastic cans etc. Whole Poland need a cleanup and a campaign against throwing thrash.

Dog poop depends on the city or even neighbourhood. In my area everyone picks it. But if few persons stop, it’ll be cascading. Community must watch each other to impose self guilt.

    I keep calling these in.

    1/3 they clean it up.
1/3 they say there’s nothing to clean.
1/3 they refuse to tak action claiming that bins are not necessary and they’re already cleaning that area.

  11. The dog poop flooding our sidewalks is the worst. It was the biggest thing my American and Canadian colleagues pointed out as a shocking difference, on the other side of the pond ppl will rat on dog owners and there are hefty fines. What do you think of expanding the scope of Straż Miejska to have to clean those up as well as to give out large fines or mandated community service to ppl who don’t clean up after their dogs? (Straż usually only strolls around texting or gossiping on the phone, and ofc parking tickets.)

  12. I live in America and it’s like this too in some cities. It’s sad that people don’t care about the environment 🙁

    — please, do yourself a great favor and watch “Dzień Świra” / “Day of the Wacko” (2002)

  14. I commented that I didn’t find Poland particularly clean compared to some parts of Europe and was downvoted. I agree with you though.

Which city is this? I live in Poznań and people generally seem to be more conscious to not to litter.

  16. I have a dog so I walk it about three times a day in a near park. I make it a point to pick up on piece of little every time I’m out. It’s not much I like to think it helps a bit.

  17. I fucking hate it, I wish I could record who they are, and bring all the trash to their place. 🙂

Maybe it’s just me overreacting, but sometimes this glass bottles are broken and I have a dog who could suffer an injury which has already happened.
