Lucas Pinheiro Braathen won the gold medal in the Giant Slalom, becoming the first Brazilian and the first South American to ever reach the podium in the history of the Winter Olympics. He’s actually brazilian-norwegian (Brazilian mother and Norwegian father) and he used to compete for Norway. He’s all over the News in Brazil right now.

Did this make any news in Norway? What are people talking about it, if anything at all?

  1. ofc there has been stuff about him in the news, but not anything more special than any other medal?

Most medals get kind of drowned in new articles about new medals all the time, or unlucky swedes 😅

He is essentially treated as any other Norwegian athlete, and given the same amount of attention. That being said, there are a lot of them. In general, I think NRK are doing a great job telling the athletes’ stories this olympics.

Brazilian here. What events are considered the most prestigious in the Winter Olympics? Is alpine skiing the most important event? Or maybe Nordic skiing? In the Summer Olympics, the 100m relay, the marathon, and gymnastics are the most prestigious ones imo.

from what I hear people have a few mixed feelings about it. most people don’t really care.

many people think he is a bit of a diva for leaving norway after the country has spent countless sums of money helping him and the norwegian team reach the talent they have today.

many people thinks he did the right thing, and that the ski federation is too strict with sponsorship deals.

at the end of the day it’s not a big deal, it would be much worse if he went to sweden or something. não tem problema pq o brasil nunca vai ser um concorrente sério, é só curiosidade

  6. We are very hurt in our national pride and Lucas is regarded as a traitor of the country like Henry Rinnan now. I hope you understand that we have very strong emotions when you steal our boy from us like that.

  7. I attended an event where they (Jansrud) were talking about how the Norwegian alpine team managed to make a team of a bunch of egos and it was quite clear that both Kristoffersen and Lucas Braathen was hard to handle.

So, according to him (Jansrud), they were quite happy to get rid of Lucas Braathen since it seems like he was more focused on money than his teammates.

TBH, I don’t think people in Norway doesn’t care that much. Happy for him, but he is a Brazilian now.

He used his lineage to his advantage within Olympic policy. His case has precedent and practice too. Will Brazil earn more hardware than Portugal?

    Congratulations, Lucas!
