Most norwegians these days probably don’t know or remember who this person even is and what he did.
Some folks remember there was some church burnings, murders, suicide ect. in the 90’s related to the black metal scene, but most don’t have knowledge of the specific individuals related to the cases.
Edit:
There was a small expo recently made by the National Library of Norway which was related to black metal music and the 90’s scene. It was called “Dårlig Stemning” (Bad Mood/Unpleasant atmosphere). It was on display in Oslo first, and then in Trondheim for some time. I think Varg and was mentioned there, I do remember that the church burnings was mentioned.
He was treated pretty fairly and served his sentence.
If you’re asking about what people *think* about this person a lot of people wouldn’t know about him anymore, and for those who do most do not stand for his values (perhaps obviously, most metal fans are not keen on murder).

He’s an idiot. Lots of metalheads like burzum tho. But even if they like his music they not a fan of him burning old Viking churches and murdering people. It doesn’t even make sense to burn the original 1000 yr Viking buildings because you didn’t like that Christianity stopped the Viking age. Burn a frigging modern church then! Or even better, be a normal person and don’t burn anything!

We Norwegians know what a cringy pathetic edgy nobody he is, so he moved to another country where he can continue to be a cringy pathetic edgy nobody in peace.

He was and presumably still is a ninkompoop. We don’t “treat” him at all, because he is a nobody now, as he always should have been.

Some people who were a part of the black metal scene at that time still hold a grudge against him.
But he would be treated normally and cordially by most people. A friend of mine was in jail with him at the same time, and he was treated same as anybody else.
Younger people today wouldn’t even know who he is. Most older people who have heard of him probably wouldn’t even recognize him if they saw him walking down the street.
I can also add that he was known as a douchebag even before the murder and arsons.
