Hi there!
My wife and I are going to be in Norway late May through the first week of June. We both love hiking but aren’t experienced like it seems most Norwegians are 🙂 I would LOVE to visit some of the more mountainous regions if at all possible but have been reading some things that give me pause. Was originally looking at Jotenheimen National Park but I think we will have to come back to do that in the summer it sounds like due to ice and snow still being very likely.
I’ve seen a couple of other posts similar to this one but haven’t yet seen any options that include overnight hut stays and mountain views. I’ve also looked at UT.no and dnt.no and there is a lot of great resources there but this is such an "in between" time of year and those websites seem to specify winter vs. summer.
What are some of the best spots to get mountain views and do some hut to hut hiking that would be safe and relatively easy (elevation isn’t as much of an issue but we both lack experience with ice climbing/crampons/etc.)?
I was looking at the hike to Fonnabu from Sunndal, would that be an OK trip to take during that time of year? Any other recommendations to beautiful DNT huts like Fonnabu that wouldn’t be overly challenging?
Thank you so much, we’re incredibly excited to visit this beautiful country!
Hut to hut hiking in early June?

Great question – early June really is a tricky shoulder season in Norway, so you’re absolutely right to be cautious about Jotunheimen; looking at lower-elevation areas or more coastal/fjord regions for hut-to-hut hikes is a smart move, and planning ahead like this will definitely make your trip both safer and more enjoyable!
At [ut.no](http://ut.no), look at the opening dates for the huts and the routes. In particular, when the **staffed** huts are open, **most** of the hut to hut routes between these are too. (There are some exceptions at difficult or higher elevation routes.) For the self-service huts etc it’s more complicated. Those are often open when you can barely reach the hut, much less go hut to hut, so you need to check dates for the route or the area.
For early June:
* the south coast, “north sea trail”, “kyststi” is excellent that time of year. Few DNT huts, but there are campsites and small towns and villlages with accomodation.
* **Forested** areas in southern Norway are good in June. For example [Austheiane](https://ut.no/kart/omrade/1233/austheiane), [Blefjell](https://ut.no/kart/omrade/1213/blefjell-og-vegglifjell), [Holleia-Vassfaret](https://ut.no/kart/omrade/1278/holleia-vikerfjell-og-vassfaret) or [Hedmarksvidda](https://ut.no/kart/omrade/1221/hedmarken-og-hedmarksvidda). (maybe some snow in the highest areas of some of these)
* [Fjordruta](https://ut.no/turforslag/115720/signatur-fjordruta-pa-nordmre) should be fine. Probably a little bit of snow in the highest passes, but very passable.
* [Langsua](https://ut.no/kart/omrade/1229/langsua) should be fine. A little bit of snow in the highest passes, but avoidable.
