  1. >Even without the legal exemption, the LAG can still exclude trans women from private gatherings, but LAG spokesperson Nicole Mowbray said public events were necessary in order to attract new members.

Fuck me. They can already do it for private gatherings.

But public is PUBLIC. Not sure if they understand the meaning of the word. Why would they need to exclude anyone at all?

  2. Cis supremacists are every bit as much of a threat as white supremacists. There’s a reason they’re so often found stood next to each other.

Marginalised group of women punching down on a smaller marginalised group of women.

    Sad.

  4. Feels like they don’t really need an exemption to any laws to make this happen, no trans people will want to be near them. Probably not many guys cis folks either, they tend to be pretty unpleasant

But I’m sure the case will be well funded

  5. bipedal_potato on

I’m a cis lesbian and I want to wish the sincerest *fuck you* possible to these miserable fucking assholes. Normal gay people DO NOT align with these tar pits nor do we want to be associated with them whatsoever. Makes my blood boil every time I see bigots hiding behind the guise of my identity to practise hatred and exclusion.

  6. Mysterious_Squash867 on

‘Lesbian group’. As if. They’re just a small group of bored bigots who are desperate to punch down on someone else.

Absolutely embarrassing to be associated with their ick.

  7. unconfirmedpanda on

Good to know that TERFs can come in all age brackets.

JKR enabled this absolute bullshittery. I’d be so ashamed if hate and bigotry was my legacy.

  8. ” philosophy of lesbian feminism”

    wha?

sooo feminism not in the sense of equality sense?

  9. LGB-without-the-T groups are practically just a fifth column gnawing away at the collective safety of lgbtqia+ people from within. Stand together else die apart- true for everyone, but especially true for groups on the margins.

  10. People really need to seperate their sexuality from their personality. Lesbian and gay people should be free to have conservative values and vice versa, without being called a traitor to the sexual orientation or “community”.

  11. I suppose this is your not-so-friendly reminder that being part of a minority group yourself does not automatically make one a good person, nor does it prevent you being a bigot towards other minority groups.

  12. Gay men have male only spaces but they’re trans inclusive.

It’s not hard and it’s never been a problem. There was a really small group of men who shit themselves about it but the kind of guys who were upset were also not liked and not friendly.

So sad to see trans people be scapegoated like this. Most my trans friends don’t even like leaving the house. They are definitely not this nefarious force everyone is acting like they are. I just can’t comprehend why they are being treated so poorly by so many.

  14. Just have to say it warms my heart to see all the comments here in support of the people in the trans community. You’re good people.

  15. FeelingTangelo9341 on

Oh yeah, they don’t hate trans women. They just refer to them in derogatory ways and refuse to acknowledge that they’re also women.

    Those TERFS can get fucked.

  16. santaschesthairs on

It’s funny to me that a TERF group is called LAG. Some jokes write themselves, they’re literally behind the times.

  17. Hot take but I think I understand why they feel this way.

Women have fought hard against men for thousands of years to get their own rights, spaces, vote and autonomy, I think that progress is worth protecting and preserving. For most of their existence historically they have been treated as slaves, objects and tools by men. Sold and traded to make a man’s life easier with no escape or reprieve. In some parts of the world this is still the norm sadly.

Trans women aren’t the same as women and that’s ok, they were originally male which is often quite physiologically visible and to deny that is to deny reality, and no it doesn’t make them lesser – I think they can co-exist, but we don’t need to be legally / socially obligated to integrate the two into the exact same spaces, sports and groups etc. I don’t speak for all women on this, but I’ve known many in my time who have been assaulted, made uncomfortable or worse by men and trans women in person and online, and that’s something worth acknowledging. Ask any lesbian or bi woman on dating apps and they’ll attest to this. Feel free to chime in btw if you’ve had a weird experience using lesbian dating apps.

If keeping women’s spaces as women’s spaces to avoid this then I’m ok with that – I understand that a statistically significant amount of men are predatory, abusive and manipulative and this impact on society is wide reaching and deep. The rate of sexual assault and paedophilia crime committed predominantly by men in Australia would shock you. It’s worse than you think. If women need a space to get away from hate crime and abuse I’m ok with that.

Anyway, let’s respect, acknowledge and be proud of our differences while respecting boundaries without the hatred, I guess? All people deserve a fair go and chance but we have to acknowledge it’s not always straightforward – be it woman or trans woman.

  18. They’re going to fail this even just on semantic grounds. Victoria doesn’t actually recognise change of gender, the state recognises change of sex. Their entire argument hinges on the idea that trans women are in some way still men, but that’s just not what Victorian state law says.

    >It wishes to hold public political and social events exclusively for “lesbian-born females” that would exclude all males irrespective of whether they identify as women.

This statement is incoherent under the current law. Victoria doesn’t just allow for gender recognition. It allows for complete change of sex by self ID on all official documents. This is a really important if you’re trying to lodge a legal case. If your argument hinges on “trans women are actually men” you will lose because you’re not even considering the current state of the law. Once you go through the legal process as a trans woman **the state** recognises you as a woman by all metrics. This means that from a legal perspective you’re making an argument to remove women from women’s spaces.

To be clear this isn’t a moral argument against this. I find these women (edit for clarity, the ones pushing the legal case, I am trans) morally despicable too. But they’ll fail legally because they haven’t considered the fking laws.

  19. This is just sad. They’re a group of like 9 old women wanting the right to discriminate in public spaces so they “can recruit more members”.

All the lesbian spaces I’ve been in have had no problem getting lesbians involved. They’re fun, do fun things and are pleasant to be around. The groups that run them are also really inclusive, of bisexual women, transgender women and non-binary lesbians.

But hey keep drinking the mould and raising $40,000 from “all over the world” on this Astro-turfed rubbish.

  20. I’m a man and, so far as I’m concerned, this is for women to resolve. I doubt I have anything useful to contribute and I wish other men didn’t feel the need to.

  21. EducationalShake6773 on

Good on them. I support their right to have their own safe space. I also support the right of trans women to have their own safe space if they choose.

It’s not a bowling group, it’s a group based around sexual identity so they should absolutely have the right to exclude those with a different gender and sexual identity, it’s the whole point of the group ffs

  22. i swear everytime there’s a group like this at least half the members look like people that they would consider trans for being ‘too masculine looking’. legit no self awareness.

  23. Zealousideal_Pie8706 on

So nasty, I just don’t really get why this has become an issue the past couple of years. I guess because some famous hateful, arseholes like JK decided it is an issue, but why can’t people use their own brains instead of following celebrities?

  24. AntiqueFigure6 on

Looking at the pic the best punishment might be success because then the group will die out in a few years.

  25. Im a cisF bisexual so I have no horse in this race but after all the noise they’ve made about it, what trans woman would want to be part of their group?

  26. This image paints a pretty strong picture of why second wave was told to fuck off with far too much concern over the well off white female at the ignorance of others.

  27. Plenty-Giraffe6022 on

Be careful what you wish for. If transgender people can be legally excluded from public events, then so can lesbians.

  28. Hmm… but when men excluded leabian women from gay spaces, THAT is unjustified discrimination. Make it make sense.

I wonder if these women realise how muxh they’re just screwing women over because they’ll be setting the precedent that thry can be denied entry to public spaces too.
