Hi Everyone – I was hoping to get some advice on the most responsible way to dispose of these old sofas.

I've put them on Facebook Marketplace for free, but there's been no takers (I understand, they're old and not in great condition). There are also many others there for free as well.

Putting them in landfill seems really wasteful and that will be my last resort.

Does anyone have any better ideas on what to do with them?

Thanks in advance.

  1. Put it on the street with a sign stating the price. Someone will take it very quickly.

can potentially donate it! if i’m correct, savers do free pickup on furniture? i could be wrong but check into that!!!

Throw them on the cardboard with a free sign, someone will collect by the end of the week

  4. Are those marks stains? Have they ever been cleaned? You might have more luck if they were cleaned up.

  5. List it on marketplace for $50 – and then just tell anyone who’s interested they can have it for free if they pick it up today.

Just pay someone like 1800 got junk to take them. They’ll figure out if there’s a resell or recycling option before they go to trash.

They look like they’ve had a very good innings.

If you break them down in parts, you might have more use for them? Ie, burn the wood frame, remake the leather cover into bags, use the stuffing in teddy bears or something.

There is an oversupply of large furniture in the secondhand/donated market, some it’s doubtful you will find a taker considering the worn state of them.

If you are really principled about it not landing in a landfill , pay to get it restored and use it for many more years. Walk the talk. Or just call council, they have a hard rubbish collection service,1 free collection per financial year if you are the rate payer or you can pay a fee if you are renting .

  9. In Geelong we get free 2 a year hard rubbish collections from the council. Does your council do this ?

Someone will take it, either for a share house or a spare room / rumours. Just list it online for $100.

  11. Put it out on the nature strip with a sign saying FREE. Someone will take in within hours

Unfortunately you might just need to get council to take it as hard rubbish. We had a couch up on marketplace for ages for cheap and then put it on the nature strip but no one ever took it

  13. My drama is I want to get a new couch but the old one is upstairs and we have no way to get it downstairs. Junk removal companies cost like $500 just to show up. Wish there was an easier way, if I put it as a job on airtasker or whatever I’m worried some random will show up and injure themselves doing it

Sledge hammer. Carboard box cutter. Box Tape.

Strip the wood frame of fabric. Place the remaining materiel into a pile and make wheelie bin sized batches with box tape.

Then use the sledge hammer to smash the couch frame apart. Punch down to small wheelie bin sized batches. Box tape if required.

Spend the next 2 months posting it all to land fill.
