In a famous photograph from 1945, we see a family standing in an apartment on Grażyny 3 and Pułaska Streets in ruined Warsaw. Their upper-floor apartment no longer has any external walls, yet they appear calm and focused on their daily lives. The photograph has become a symbol of the extraordinary resilience of Warsaw residents who tried to function normally amid the city’s ruins. It is a moving testament to their determination and strength to survive in the face of the capital’s utter destruction.

Somehow I have the feeling that the top picture was staged for media effect. I recall nearly identical picture from Yugoslav wars (circa 1992).
