Tl;dr
Yesterday Macron announced the new French nuclear doctrine, with an increase in warheads, fewer public details and an invitation to 8 other countries to participate, but Italy did not accept:
In parallel with the NATO framework, Paris wants to allow its allies to “participate in nuclear deterrence exercises”. According to the Elysée, 8 countries have already “accepted”: United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, Holland, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium and Greece. For the moment, Italy therefore does not adhere to this “advanced deterrence”, even if Macron assures that he will “continue to dialogue with everyone”. Concretely, the new “club” will be allowed, among other things, to welcome French “strategic air forces”, thus capable of acting “in depth” on European territory, to “complicate the calculations” of any potential enemies. Among these, predictably, the head of the Elysée mentioned Vladimir Putin’s Russia first and foremost. Among the options raised yesterday was the possibility of deploying other “strategic force elements” among the allies.
There are a bit more details about RID:
France will increase its arsenal, abandon numerical transparency and begin to operationalize a tightly controlled form of “advanced deterrence” against selected European partners.
