Could be my age.. but don't go to a gig at places like FVMH, Tiv, Triff etc where there isn't an incline (like river stage) and proceed to try and record a minute of every song whilst holding the phone above your head.

In this instance, said person did it for almost 90% of the set. You aren't going to post 12+ stories, you aren't going to show your friends every 30 second clip nor will you go back and look at the videos.

As a 6ft+ tall person I'm privileged to be able to see at most events, but I felt awful trying to view the artist and adjusting my position, no doubt getting in the way of someone behind me.

(I am all for getting a sneaky video or photo! But do it at your face height and not for the whole set!!)

my memory is garbage, i take videos of most of the shows i go to because in a weeks time i wont really remember much of it other than i went there and saw them. i dont send or really post the videos and i do revisit them every few months and it helps me build the experience into my long term memory

so sorry no, i wont be stopping

  3. I get pulling out your phone, taking a few quick photos or a short video, but taking hundreds of photos or lengthy videos is dumb, inconsiderate to others in the crowd and disrespectful to the artist – they want you to be present in the moment.

  4. I wish a severe and aggressive infestation of worms on anyone who acts like this. Cunts to a man.

Unfortunately until venues implement rules to prevent/curb this kind of behavior, I can’t see anything changing. People are far too besotted with social media and simply cannot exist in the moment any more. It sucks.

  5. This is absolute fuckwit behaviour. People who can’t live in the moment and ruining the present experience for other people. Like as if you’re going to look at the video later.

I had this same shit pulled on me at a Metallica gig in Australia last year. I politely said, ‘I didn’t pay over $300 to watch it through your phone, so put it away, please.’ By all means, take a few photos, but don’t record the whole gig.

Holy shit it’s so frustrating. 2 dumb cunts in front of me were filming whole songs when I went to watch Linkin Park the other night. Thank god the crowd was shuffling around and I finally got a good view.

I don’t mind this if this is only for like half a song or whatever. Like I get it, people want to take videos and photos, but if it’s constant throughout the show, yeah that’s annoying af.

Saw this behaviour but on inception levels at the Princess last week – the actual professional videographer got told to fuck off so the lazy arse bitch could sit in her seat upstairs and film from her chair up in the balcony.

Never seen anything like it, hope I don’t see it again.

The pit was going off and it was respectful and heaps of fun. But she wanted to film it from her seat upstairs. So gross.

I take a few shots here and there myself. Usually one for each band where I get a selfie with them or their banners or whatnot in the background. With bands like Iron Maiden I’ll snap some when Eddie comes out or take a short video here or there. I try not to hold my phone above my head unless I need to but I’m also never really at the front anymore, more like around the sound mixing desk where the sound is good.

I feel that if you try that in the wrong spaces at most the concerts I attend you’re going to drop your phone or lose it and not because people intentionally try to make you, just from the action and movement in the crowd.

At wrestling events I tend to take a few shots of the wrestlers as they come out and sometimes if I think there is going to be a big spot I’ll do some recording. But for the local indies shows I’m usually right up front and at bigger events that’s in an arena where I’m sitting on raised seating and I once again don’t hold above my head… unless everyone has stood up in front of me (which happens).

I’ve ‘accidentally’ knocked the recording device out of their hands if they dont respond well after a polite request. It’s fun watching them try to retrieve it before it becomes a sacrifice to the pit gods

  12. I think if you’re going to take a video there needs to be an etiquette – keep the phone within the space your body takes up, don’t put it above head height and dim your screen to the lowest brightness. I know there’s always people that hate it but you can still take home a few momentos without being assholes to the people around you. They didn’t pay a hundred (or two hundred) dollars depending to see your phone screen all night.

This is just concert behaviour now, it’s so frustrating that people normalise it

event venues need to start banning this shit since people have forgotten how to not be entitled cunts

As a short person, I take a handful of like 10-30 second videos throughout the show and just try to be mindful I don’t put my phone up above anyone’s head (just between shoulders). TBH it’s often the only way I can see what’s on stage a lot of the time. That’s me living in the moment.

This sort of shit is why I don’t go to gigs any more. Too many people are there just to capture the occasion for social media clout. It’s no wonder live music is dying. Cunts like this putting genuine music lovers off

  17. Also don’t be the person the films others & post it on social media for attention 🙄

  18. Take some photos at the start then wait for a part you know is epic or your favourite to film once. Enjoy the rest of the show.
