  1. Quite the geopolitical mind there Peter, withdraw support from the country fighting the Russians over you making use of nationalistic pride for campaign. Is Hungary trading one shill for another?

  2. KnightFlorianGeyer on

I mean, wtf is Zelensky doing, though? Why is he just giving fuel for Orban a month before the election, pretty much forcing Peter Magyar to say stuff like this?

  3. All of you that are commenting that this is a stupid move are either bots or people who really don’t understand how politics works.
It would be a political suicide for him to say anything less than this. And would play right into the Orbans hand even more than the stupid thing Zelensky said.
Even if he wishes Orban dead, that’s not something he can say if he wants to win elections.
And let’s face it. This is Zelensky’s mess to clean up.

  4. why is hungary still even a part of the eu… they should’ve been thrown out like 5 years ago

  5. Yeah he probably overshot on the response, but Zelensky forced his hand tbh. Shockingly dumb thing to say regardless of how infuriating Orban is.

  6. ThrowawaypocketHu on

Thanks Zelensky for giving Orbán more ammo for his campaign.

I swear, sometimes I don’t get the stupidity of european leaders.

  7. guywithoutpast on

Frankly I don’t think he could have said anything else considering upcoming elections.
The electorate likes to know that even the most miserable citizen is more important than the president of another country.

  8. Past_Point1497 on

I would ask him in return: doesn’t he think that all EU leaders should cut any ties with Hungary for it being a russian trojan horse in the EU?

I lose all respect towards Hungarians

  9. Hungary (and Slovakia for that matter) have really been amping up the rhetoric recently. Putin must be extra pissed about recent Ukrainian counteroffensives.

  10. Ok_Photo_865 on

Better yet, the EU should cut ties with Hungary until it apologies to Ukraine for working as an agent for Putin

  11. FatherMozgus on

I agree, Zelensky should put out a genuine apology. Orban is vile but threatening the safety of the head of state of an EU member is not good optics and makes Zelensky look like a thug. Even Orban with all of his offensive and careless statements did not directly threaten Zelensky.

  12. I don’t like Orban and everything he represents, but threatening to assassinate an EU leader is unacceptable, period.

  13. Could’ve come out and said: “See, Orban is going to get us in a war with Ukraine”. Which would also be an accurate statement. Actual free ammo for Magyar.

I guess Orban isn’t all that bad and authoritarian if even the opposition jumps in to defend him. You won’t see Machado or Pahlavi crying for Maduro and Khamenei.

  14. FirstIdChoiceWasPaul on

Hate to be that guy, but this has been one huge fuckup for Ukraine.

I sincerely think officials should be banned from social media.

  15. I can’t believe what stupidity Zelensky just said. A part of my brain wants to believe this is some arrangement, maybe made with MAGA to get Orban reelected. He cannot be so stupid.

  16. albertoseptim117 on

Orbàn is a despicable piece of garbage, but Zelensky basically threatening to murder a European head of goverment was stupid, self harming and completely out of line.

  17. grumpysnowflake on

Guess everybody has a breaking point. Zelensky has been under enormous pressure for 4 years. But he should have somebody to review his tweets before going live.

  18. AvariceLegion on

The EU has let Orban ruin their agenda and spoil the relationship with Ukraine

This is their mess to clean up

Even if they can’t get this package to Ukraine, they can grow a spine and unfreeze Russian assets to make Orban’s threat irrelevant

  19. Plasma_Blitz on

Putting aside Magyar likely doing this to pander to some of the more hardline Fidesz votes, that comment from Zelensky was one of his more idiotic blunders. He could’ve said anything else to rebuke Orban but indirectly threatening military retaliation is simply vindicating the Hungarian government’s stance against Ukraine.

  20. lostsailorlivefree on

I like Zelinsky for his leadership through the war but he’s easily baited into setting his own position back. Play smart with the ball, don’t give it away easily

Today in Budapest, Hungarian authorities took seven Ukrainian citizens hostage. The reasons are still unknown, as well as their current well-being, or the possibility of contacting them.

These seven Ukrainians are employees of state-owned Oschadbank, who were operating two bank cars transiting between Austria and Ukraine and carrying cash as part of regular services between state banks.

In fact, we are talking about Hungary taking hostages and stealing money. If this is the “force” announced earlier today by Mr Orban, then this is a force of a criminal gang. This is state terrorism and racketeering.

We have already sent an official note demanding an immediate release of our citizens.

We will also address the European Union with the request to provide a clear qualification of Hungary’s unlawful actions, hostage-taking, and robbery.

  22. EU leaders should cut ties with Hungary and be free of them blocking every decision.

  23. ProfessionalTotal238 on

Well, I think Magyar and Ukrainian leadership might have cooperated on it. See, Ukraine is really unpopular in Hungary, that’s a consequence of propaganda but also a matter of fact. Orban have been riding anti-Ukrainian rhetoric for a while now, but Magyar did not have a chance to peek into that kind of anti-Ukrainian electorate. Now, Zelensky does his remark and gives Magyar an opportunity to peek into anti-Ukrainian sentiment, and make all these Fidezsh posters with Magyar and Zelensky shaking hands look dumb. Orban can not simply call Magyar EU/Ukraine stooge any more, and the timing was good right before an election so Hungarian voters won’t forget it.

  24. Both Zelensky and Magyar comments make sense. As of now, Hungary via Orbán isn’t just threatening Ukraine, it is actively undermining its security via its influence in the EU. Ukraine is at war, and Hungary is clearly an enemy, Zelensky had to show strength. Ukrainians, and Zelensky more than anyone else, have been extremely patient and careful while dealing with foreigners. I don’t think it’s fair to criticize Zelensky/Ukrainians on that point when so many times they could have lost their mind, but decided to simply thank you for you support, knowing anything else would only make the situation worse.

On the other side, from a Hungarian perspective it is obviously unacceptable, any other comment from Magyar would be suicide, especially right before the elections.

So honestly I understand both, and I don’t think any of those two statements are to be taken for anything but political statements. Magyar probably wants Hungary to stop being the black sheep of Europe and regain it’s status as a respectable regional player, and Ukraine has more urging problems to deal with.

I think “Hungary” and “Slovakia” will become synonyms for traitors the way Quisling is, maybe for centuries.

I can’t imagine, if Sweden got invaded in an imperial war of conquest, that the Norwegian government would stab them in the back, sabotage them, demand they send us oil from the aggressor, ban weapon deliveries, and publically antagonize them and treat them as an enemy, depriving them of funds they need to survive and keep fighting. And if they did, there would almost certainly be a violent overthrow of the government.

Ukraine gets invaded, entire cities destroyed and unknown numbers of civilians slaughtered, in a war of genocidal conquest, and their NEIGHBOUR stabs them in the back and joins their enemy in antagonizing and trying to destroy them.

A NEIGHBOUR would be their staunchest supporter, doing everything they could do support Ukraine economically and militarily. Yet Hungary chooses to help their invader, instead… How immoral do you have to be, how utterly devoid of honour and decency and compassion?

And after years of being stabbed in the back by their neighbour while they’re being slaughtered, Zelensky snaps and says something stupid back, and the so called “opposition” reacts in this manner?

Words can’t describe my disgust and contempt. What a fucking evil country. And everyone else should stop making excuses for them. Yeah, maybe Zelensky did say something stupid, but don’t try to shift the blame here, or in any way legitimize the backstabbers. I’ve had it with this moral collapse phenomenon

  26. Omg, its sounds like Zelensky threaten Orbans life, when in reality he said that he gives ukrainian soldiers Orban’s number so they know whose to say “thank you”. In other hands orban blocking 90 billions, that already cost lifes of Ukrainian soldiers, but seems nobody cares…

  27. That was so stupid of Zelensky it’s tempting to believe he was told to do it by the US to bolster Orban, but that doesn’t seem too likely, unfortunately, even if it would make sense.

This probably hurts Magyar’s chances immensely, right before the election, and Orban has been trying to use Ukraine to smear Magyar for years only for this to happen right now…

  28. This is why Tisza needs to be careful regarding the war:

Back during the 2022 elections (right after the war in Ukraine started) the Fidesz campaign took a single quote from opposition leader Péter Márki-Zay and totally stripped it of its context.

He did an interview on the YouTube channel Partizán and was asked what he’d do about the war if he were Prime Minister. He gave a pretty standard answer. He said Hungary would follow whatever joint decisions the NATO alliance makes. The interviewer pushed him on it, asking “Even weapons? Even soldiers?” MZP answered, “If NATO decides so even soldiers.” (He also noted right then that NATO wasn’t actually planning to do that).

**Fidesz’s media machine basically took that clip and removed the “If NATO decides” prerequisite.**

**Suddenly, the narrative wasn’t about honoring international treaties. It was twisted into “Márki-Zay personally wants to drag Hungary into the war and send your sons to die in Ukraine.”** Because Fidesz controls so much of the media landscape in Hungary from public TV to huge online portals and thousands of billboards they blasted this 24/7. You couldn’t go outside or open a browser without seeing it.

It let Fidesz completely rebrand their campaign overnight. They positioned themselves as the sole protectors of peace, while painting the united opposition as the reckless “pro-war left”. When people are already terrified of a war breaking out next door that kind of simple, fear-based messaging works incredibly well.

By constantly hammering the “peace vs. war” narrative Fidesz triggered a massive rally around the flag effect. Undecided voters who were unhappy with the government suddenly prioritized stability and security above everything else. They didn’t want to risk voting for an opposition coalition that the media was telling them would send their kids to a warzone.

It also successfully fractured the opposition’s fragile voting base. Many right-leaning or moderate voters who had planned to vote for the united opposition got spooked by the constant propaganda. They either stayed home, voted for a third party or actually voted for Fidesz out of pure self-preservation.

**THIS secured Orbán’s fourth 2/3 victory. This is why Tisza must be cautious at every move they make.**

Is this more to cater to Hungarians who don’t want to vote for Orban but after years of his media assault licking Putin’s boots Magyar still has to pretend Ukraine is an issue

  30. Ok-Cauliflower-7168 on

Could someone help me understand, Is there a genuine anti-ukraine sentiment in Hungary?

I’m confused why both the incumbent and opposition parties use such strong rhetoric against ukraine

  31. Hey, so, the noise of the Middle East right now kinda put me behind a bit. What did Zelenskyy say?
