I was really hoping for an impact. Even if it meant regolith/dust finding its way into the busy Earth orbits, I really wanted to see the resulting explosion/crater. Oh well
Good to have official confirmation from ESA that 2024 YR4 isn’t a lunar threat. The amount of attention this asteroid got shows how much public interest there is in planetary defense now compared to even ten years ago. It’s encouraging that our detection and tracking capabilities have improved to the point where we can confidently rule out impacts well in advance. Every close call like this is essentially a free calibration exercise for our early warning systems.
