Distracted Driver detection cameras switched on last week. You can now be fined for just having your phone sitting on your lap or your seatbelt on wrong. Here are the locations of every one of them in Victoria.
If only there was a solution to not get caught using a phone while driving 🤡

If you don’t have a phone holder in the big 2026 and still put it on your lap then you deserve to get fined
zaprime87 on
You’re not allowed to drive with your phone on your lap. Regardless of whether you are using it or not.

And why do I need the location of every Distracted Driver detection camera in Victoria?
Beast_of_Guanyin on
Good. They should be fined for that. More please.
You could also be fined for those things prior. It was just rare.

Is this not the same as the phone detection cameras?

It’s good that people can be fined for this nonsense. People who can’t go 5 minutes without their phone and care more about responding to a text than the safety of other people while driving a 1 ton death machine can go fuck themselves.

Does it matter if it’s on or not?

I’m going to print this out and keep it in my car. I’ll will read it regularly while driving to make sure I don’t get busted.

Good. Hope the people who drive distracted don’t see your list and get fined royally.

What about a camera that detects a parent doing 100km/h on eastlink while trying to fetch a shoe from the back seat floorboard because the toddler took it off and threw it and is now screaming blue murder wanting their shoe back on?
LingualGannet on
These are just the pre-approved locations where they can set up. The cameras rotate between the locations and the locations list itself gets regularly updated.
Worth checking if there’s a location on your daily commute but if you don’t have your head in your phone you’ll see them way before they see you.
Only thing worth doing is explaining to any regular front-seat passengers you have to make sure they keep their seatbelt adjusted properly and not under one arm

Are these the same type that are clogging the courts in Queensland with false allegations?

I can’t open it but is it evenly distributed around the city? Or is it like red light and speed camera which are concentrated in the inner city and mostly eastern m/south east suburbs? Yes Westgate has one and same with bell street but I don’t think the further out suburbs in both directions really do

They were switched on years ago

All things aside, this isnt exactly a list of “wealthiest towns in Victoria” (bar a small few mentions).
It’s almost like the well off get off.

You say “just” as if that’s not a stupid fucking thing to do.
Why do I get this error when I try to open the file?

Bring it on. There should be more taxes on dumdums.

Mounted phones are safe to use for navigation and accepting jobs?
I’m a courier.
Mounted on right side of steering wheel and 1 finger operation. Eyes don’t need to leave the road.

The other day, I saw a guy driving while eating a bowl of, what I guess was, cereal. It looked quite tricky with the bowl, the spoon and the steering wheel.
Use of mobile phones by the driver while driving is another matter. Don’t do it. Driving a car? Don’t touch your phone. Use phone features to limit distractions before driving (driving mode, aircraft mode, do not disturb etc), or turn it off.

Avoid fines by not breaking the law.

Meanwhile, today while driving through Moonee Ponds I watched a cop car pull up next to a Deliveroo driver who was having a full-on video chat on his handlebar-mounted phone and… nothing.

It’s kind of ridiculous that you can use CarPlay with no restrictions

Maybe just, and this could be a hot take, but maybe just…I don’t know… wear your fucking seatbelt correctly and don’t use your fucking phone when driving?!

They change the location every month, no big secret
you always could have been fined for having your phone on your lap or wearing your seat belt incorrectly lol, this is just a means to enforce an already existing rule.

So if I stand-up on my adventure bike while having a stretch to avoid a cramp, or have cruise control engaged and shaking out wrists, etc, does that mean I am distracted? I can literally have an iPad playing porn on my dash (for example) while riding anywhere if I chose to, but that’s legal. Explain it to me like I’m 5yo.

Here is a link to the [consequences of a rollout of similar technology in Western Australia](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-03-02/backlash-perth-ai-road-safety-cameras-speeding-seatbelt-fines/106405328). Summary: the fining of drivers for the improper wearing of seatbelts by their passengers has proven to be controversial.
