(This map exists under the assumption of a 100% federal Spain, which I would consider the ideal government model for Spain)
This thing is partially inspired by other similar posts where people did similar exercises on how they would reorganize the autonomous communities of Spain, although I had already thought of the idea independently. The original map from which I started was one of all the municipalities in Spain, so you can imagine how much work areas like Castiles or León have been…
The criterion has mainly been based on support for the separation or union of various regions, starting with the 20th century onwards, both before and after Franco until the present, and taking into account the cultural, historical and linguistic regions.
As you can see, in some regions I have not touched anything (the two archipelagos, Aragon, Cantabria, Asturias and Extremadura) and in others I have only changed some municipalities here and there (Galicia now has the Galician-speaking part of Bierzo, Murcia has some municipalities that wanted to stay with them when Albacete left with Castilla-La Mancha or that historically belonged to them like Villena or Sax, La Rioja obtaining Riojilla Burgalesa, the Rioja Alavesa and the Rioja areas of Soria, as well as the Navarra riverside (we’ll talk about that later).
There have been separations, such as separating Andalusia into two, tentatively Andalusia/Betica and Granada (the feeling existed during the Second Republic and the transition, and as someone familiar with the area, I notice several times a discontent with the disinterest of the western part and Seville in particular), separating León from the now Old Castile (which as you all know the procedures to do so have begun), separating Castilla-La Mancha into La Mancha proper and New Castile and the separation of the Val D’Aran from Catalonia as its own autonomous region.
Madrid and its dormitory cities have been grouped within a Greater Madrid that I imagine as a kind of federal region, with the rest of the Community going to Castilla La Nueva.
And we arrive at, as the Angles say, the "elephant in the room". Navarra and the Basque Country.
Originally my plan was just to give the Ribera de Navarra to the Rioja (having read several people on the Internet talking about how they are culturally very very similar, and knowing that the original province of Logroño included several parts of the Ribera), but after doing so I noticed that Navarra was getting a little small and that realistically, it would end up being dominated by the Basque Country and the Gran Rioja. And taking into account how the Ribera areas are the most anti-Basque, I decided to bite the bullet and unite the rest of Navarra with Euskadi.
It’s the only part where it can be 50/50 for me. Leaving Navarra and Euskadi as they are and Rioja leaving only the Riojan areas of Euskadi and Castilla for me is just as good. There have been other parts in which I have also had different ideas (uniting Asturias with León, uniting the two Castiles), but only in this one do I not really have a preference.
The truth is that it has been a very difficult project, not only because of having to paint each municipality individually, but because of all the decisions and dilemmas that I have had to make and debate with myself. Lately I’m happy with the map.
Now, time to see how everyone beats me to death :v
