Missiles and Macarena. So the war in Iran has become viral content

The White House continues to spread videos about war operations in Iran over funny songs and video game images. Memes and institutional communication have merged into a new form of propaganda. Where between reality and pixels, games and death, there is no longer any distinction.

The latest video, published last night, features a montage of war images mixed with images taken from Call of Duty, a popular war video game. Real war and simulated war. Put together, without any distinction. The video is accompanied by a message: “Courtesy of Red, White & Blue”, courtesy of a patriotic American to the public ridicule of his followers on social media.

The central mechanism, the one that governs everything else, is what in Narrative Governance we call Frame Shift: the movement of an event from one cognitive frame to another. War, in the collective perception of anyone who has even a mediated experience of it, inhabits a frame of gravity, of irreversible consequences, of responsibility. When the White House edits real bombing scenes with a video game interface, it is doing something precise and deliberate. It’s moving the war out of the frame "conflict with real consequences" al frame "game to win”. And, they openly declare, they are winning the game. Like in a video game.

When the boundary between institutional communication and meme disappears, when a democratic (or non-democratic) government communicates its war operations with the same codes with which a creator publishes a reel, in influencer tells his truth, bent to opportunism by design, it is not just an aesthetic or "institutional decorum”.
