I came out for the day from the Gold Coast. What a cultural shift it is visiting Brisbane. Much more diverse, so many eccentric characters roaming around. It feels like a holiday from the holiday destination.
What do Brisbane and Gold Coast residents think of the stark differences between the two? In Sydney the major alternatives are Newcastle, Gosford, Wollongong and Katoomba for a break of something different.

Is it really that much of a cultural shift? Compared to what?
Is the sculpture mayor Adrian?
I’m sure Neville Bonner would be thrilled that his effigy is being used to whitewash (or should I say, blackwash) the largest casino development in Australia.
Can’t imagine the people with Israeli flags had a great time
Today I learned people from the Gold Coast come to Brisbane for a holiday
We hate BrisVegss like San Francisco hates ‘Frisco’.
I don’t notice a difference
I’m sure you’re used to the hare krishna’s
What’s up with the people in the third photo? The march for and against war happening concurrently?
What head is that?
Every time I go to the GC it lowers my self-esteem lmao.
The GC probably has the highest concentration of skinny tan women in the whole damn country!
Can’t stand the Gold Coast. It’s full of the worst people by far.
In Brisbane I’m confident most people are fairly solid, have normal jobs, mostly reasonable. We have our share of weirdos and people doing it tough but overall, it feels fairly safe.
The Gold Coast feels starkly full of either entitled influencers, mentally damaged drug addicts left to their own devices with little support, and people who moved there from Melbourne or Sydney coz it was cheaper and they liked it on holiday. I never feel safe there. I can’t put my finger on it exactly but if living in the Valley by the beach was a thing, it would be the Gold Coast.
I grew up in Brisvegas. I then spent 10 years in Wollongong, and 4 in the Werribee area, Melbourne, before moving up to the Gold Coast.
I think people who live in smaller towns by the sea are much friendlier. And I think each suburb is different, depending on socioeconomics.
Gold Coast is where Australians go to hang out with other Australians.
Probably why it’s a ratshit sorta place.
I haven’t been to Brissie in ages. The new Star casino looks good and I always enjoyed Southbank but the GC is the place for me.
Gold Coast is tacky beyond belief, full of plastics and posers. Everyone on the Gold Coast is a contentious prick. The fact the corrupt mayor wants a Trump Tower tells you everything you need to know.
That’s the thing that makes living in Bris / SE Qld different to other Australian cities – can go from one quite reasonable sized place with skyscrapers to another reasonable sized place with skyscrapers an hour away. Two different cities, two different vibes and lifestyle. Yes the GC has the beaches and tourists but also has some quite good dining options as well, whereas Brisbane being a bit inland doesn’t have the beach / surf culture. Kind of like that there’s a difference between the two and somewhere to go on the weekends – the razzle / dazzle. Very different to say the Melb / Geelong nexus or the Sydney to Newcastle / Gong dimension.
Don’t know much about GC nightlife but Brisbane is pretty good – restaurants, cafes, bars, pubs, entertainment – shows, sports etc even stuff for families. I love it
I’d say the starkest difference between the two is that Brisbane maybe feels a little bit more genuine and city-like. Gold Coast has the best beaches of anywhere in the world but the actual developed parts feel a tad depressing.
Be careful of the words you say. Not worth the prison time. Otherwise, have fun.
the only reason i go to the gold coast is to get to the nicer beaches in northern nsw
Grew up on the GC. Lived in Bris for years. Going back I realise what a hole it is and always has been.
I just dont like how long it takes to get from the river to the sea. Like really, that should be free.
