My great great grandfather was born in Poland in 1859 probably near Lublin. Does anyone know what the context for this photo might be? Another of my ancestors has a similar photo.

  1. Alphonse Bertillon, the inventor of the criminal identification system, introduced a similar system in 1883. That would seem to correspond to the age of these people. So this could be a photograph from a police station or something similar. But that’s just a guess.

  2. How did you get those photos?

Can you validate those are really them? Have you found them in some family documents?

But yeah i agree they look like concentration camp photos or some forced labor camp photos.

  3. Well I have googled the surname Jord and apparently it’s Jewish (not sure if it is correct) and if it is then it may be related to the antisemitic persecution.

What the hell are you all talking about? The photos are poor quality, but these people don’t look like they’re in their 80s, especially the person in the second one, so it’s unlikely they’re on their way to a concentration camp.

It looks much more like a typical photo of people going to prison.

People tell you it’s jail. If you’re Australian, then you know that’s the answer
