    >The 50-cent fares have been made permanent by the LNP government following a trial by the former Labor government.

“Because it would be political suicide to cancel them.” FTFY, Aunty.

Let’s not pretend like Crisafuckwit and Mickelturd actually care about Queenslanders.

Increase the fines. Someone who is trying to steal 50c is never, ever going to pay their fare out of any reason other than fear.

  3. Illustrious_Club239 on

The overall number of fines given for fare evasion has reduced.

Thank you Steven Miles and his Labor government for 50c fares.

Like I get the arithmetic back when fares were $5 – it’s a calculated risk! – but at 50c you’re effectively betting on *never* getting caught in order for evasion to be cost-effective, even if we completely ignore any moral dimension.

    > In 2023 — which was the last full calendar year before the discounted prices commenced — authorities gave out 13,486 fines and 60,930 warnings.
    > In comparison, in 2025, when all fares were 50 cents, there were 8,614 fines and 45,117  warning notices.

Overal, less fines and less warning, got it.

  6. We found an old go card and checked it out on the translink top up machines. Last touch on was nundah to bowen hills 2019. $3.31 it cost. It was great when the fares went to 50c. Imagine how much better qld would have been if Miles stayed in
I mean Anastacia left Miles up the creek without a paddle and he tried his hardest to get back to land. But nope we end up with cunafulla shitski instead.

  7. Should just be free and avoid all the costs associated with fines, courts and enforcing officers.

  8. > 3,714 penalties were **given out on trams** and 2,839 infringement notices dished out on buses.

GC doing some heavy lifting here. How many of these would be tourists who have no idea what to do?

  9. How much did we spend on staff to issue the fines? Probs more id think but its not in the article

Overheard someone on the train talking to his mate loudly on the phone bragging about evading the fare. Like why?

Don’t understand people skipping EXCEPT for buses that don’t accept card. 95% of the time I catch PT is a train so I never bring my Go Card. Having buses be the only transport that requires Go Card sucks

This will be misleading BS from Crisafulli to justify rolling back the 50c fares

  13. Purple_Fall4601 on

Very cool of the LNP to create this 50c fare thing, I wonder where they got the idea.

Article title is misleading. It makes people assume that it’s an increase, when actual fare evasion fines have decreased since the 50-cent fares were introduced.

And this is on top of an increase of evasion patrols.

Really wish news orgs were more accurate with their article titles, rather than this click bait.

  15. What is the cost of collecting fares and enforcement compared to revenue raised through fares and fines?

Aren’t we just better off making it all free at this point?

  16. This is insane. It’s 50c. How the hell can people not scrape up 50c to catch the bus, train or ferry?

I know that I see a lot of younger people in their teens or early 20’s that just walk on to the buses I catch and the driver just has to account for them on his terminal, so why are they doing it? Are they just too cheap to do it? Or too arrogant?

  17. 50c fares have been a real gem, but with the cost of fuel skyrocketing, how can they afford to keep it at 50c though?

  18. YouPuzzleheaded5273 on

Should put that money back into the pocket qr staff that are just about to get cut from their jobs

I’d like to see how much the government claws back from “fixed fares”, which occur when you fail to properly touch on or off (they’re set at $2.50 at the moment).  Have you checked your travel history lately?  I bet you have some!

Fixed fares used to prevent fare evasion, back when it used to cost more to travel farther.  Now that Translink knows what the correct fare should be with 100% accuracy (it’s 50c, unless going to the airport), they should get rid of fixed fares. I guess they are meant to act deterrent for incorrect usage of the system (they really, really, really want that complete journey data for reasons), but I see them as unfair punishment for being inattentive to Translinks own equipment failing.

(inb4: Airtrain dickheads don’t let you get through their gates without proving you’ve touched off properly, so it doesn’t prevent that scam either.)

At this point why not make public transport free? Surely the cost of administrating the ticketing system and enforcement outweighs any revenue generated?
