Which bit is no go? Is it the purple bits?
Because the picture you have shows lime bikes everywhere?

Maybe it had something to do with the recent pedestrian collisions, or they got sick of the littering

i would reckon they are testing geo-fenced parking areas in order to alleviate the bikes being left all over the place. you can see this in Royal Botanic Garden, you are unable to drop a bike off there. instead of building physical docks, lime can force new trips to only drop off bikes in a designated area.
agreed it’s a bit confusing for the rider but hopefully it helps the problem of bikes strewn about on every footpath, impeding pedestrians, prams, elderly and so on.
the alternative here is to build physical docks in designated areas, then require bikes to be dropped off in a dock. they do this for Citibike in NYC and I think it works well, helps you plan your trip as a rider bc you know where to drop off the bike in relation to where you’re going. the geo-fenced “docks” is confusing as someone who might be trying to use Lime to commute, as you are probably unaware of where to leave the bike and how far away it is in relation to your destination, which would impact your travel time, ultimately reducing the effectiveness of using lime bikes as a last-mile form of transportation (kind of defeats the purpose).

a service that’s often more trouble than it’s worth

Almost certainly a fat fingering of the data entry. I’ve noticed new areas being programmed in which make no sense and are fixed after complaints are made. They zoned the Eastlakes Golf Club as a no go zone…which made the prominent cycleway which cuts through the middle of it on a major arterial road (Wentworth Ave) a no go zone as well. Same with the Harbour Bridge – they made that a no go zone even though it should have been a no parking area.
