A ridiculous, senseless and cruel tradition that is slowly being phased out. Horrible practice.
Used as “companionship” or “pets”, or as bait to attract other birds during hunting season due to their calls.

A bird.

This is a tradition of carrying a bird with you.
It’s a trophy 🏆 and you take it with you to show off. Typically the caged bird is European Greenfinch.
Such birds are caught during trapping season, legally or illegally. They sell for “good” money.
Not defending the traditional or ownership of such practices, but some people here think that this is hunting while in fact it’s trapping. Keeping such birds in cages is no different than keeping parrots, lovebirds, or any kind of bird in a cage.

That’s fairly common here. The greenfinch is bred successfully in large avaries, so it’s easy to find and buy. They carry them around like a prized trophy cause of the song it does. It’s an old hobby so it won’t be easily eradicated.

When people in Malta have birds as pets they will put them out to see and feel the sun, so they can feel freedom in a cage *sarcasm* which then the bird in turn will reward the owners with their song (most probably for help)!

That’s a “gabietta” with a songbird in it: a barbaric trapping tradition that is illegal in the EU but still practiced in Malta. The birds themselves are often carried around by their owners as companions who enjoy listening to their song.
