You get bigger discounts if there is a lot of one item. A lot of the time it’s just 1 or 2 items the discount won’t change much or sometimes at all.
If there are 20 of the same thing going ofd in a couple days you can get up to 50% off, but obvs they don’t last long.

I don’t get why they do this at my local, seen many a photos of heavy discounts at other stores, but mine it’s 20-60¢ off for near date expiry or get the fresh ones full price with a week to spare.
There’s families out there that count the cents in their wallet and this would be great for them rather than just thrown away.

Ignore the yellow stickers and compare price per kilo. Chicken breast is still cheaper, even with the discounts. Chicken drumsticks are a third of the price. You’re paying for the convenience of the preparation.

I don’t understand why they bother with this. I picked up some cheese the other day and it was *only* like a dollar or so off (20% off at most, probably more like 10 or 15%) and when it scanned a the till it flashed up and they took it off me because it’d passed it’s sell by date.
How did it only get to 20% off? It’s seems like their policy switched perhaps 6 months ago to we’d rather throw out everything than offer any sort of discount just to get at least some money (and, you know, *not* waste food!)

It also depends on where you live too. My Coles in the inner city you’d be lucky to get a WHOPPING 40 cents for meat/bread with a use by date of the same day where as when I’ve been out in lower socioeconomic areas (cough Loganholme and Eagleby cough), I find proper discounts of 50-60% off.
It’s like the bloody petrol problem- if they know you can afford it, you won’t get the same “discounts” as other parts of Brisbane.

Yes but the third discounts are usually heavily competitive. We are only allowed to do 2 discounts prior, 1 the day before and one the day of before clearance MD. We don’t get to pick how much they get markdown before clearance as our machines determine the % based of metrics.
Clearance markdown depending on the person and product is between 68-78%. Usually stores do this during late afternoons and we get swarmed by customers during this period.
