  1. In other news, employers workshop new ways to imply staff WFH without actually mandating it so they can deny it later.

    * “If you want to WFH thats up to you.”

    * “Have you considered public transport?”

    * “We are a flexible workplace.”

It is not the time for panic. However, we need to acknowledge that if this war keeps going, then it will hurt a bit. Actions taken early, such as immediate fuel rations and wfh mandates, alleviate more of that long term pain when adopted early. Stop dancing around it. This is unavoidable unless America withdraws. They do not appear ready to, so take more action now. It is time.

  3. The government tip toeing around this issue makes me believe the issue is worse than they are letting on.

I usually get petrol after 10:30/11 pm and have noticed a lot of petrol stations around where I live in North West Sydney either run out of petrol but still open (7/11) or just shut early if they close at 12.

While I’m sure they probably get a delivery in the middle of the night or early morning this really shouldn’t be happening in a country like Australia

  4. The media is desperate to whip up a Covid-style panic over this.

The reality is, if fuel rationing happened, it wouldn’t be the end of civilisation. It would actually be an amazing example of the sort of societal levers we can to pull that, yes, would cause inconvenience and maybe some amount of hardship for some, but would prevent really bad things from happening and help keep society going.

And as usual the discussion will be about how this is really bad but no changes to be implemented

  6. It’s already becoming clear just with their behaviour with these price fluctuations that our wholesale and distribution network can’t be trusted to behave in the public interest with anything even smelling faintly of actual supply constraints.

  7. How the F do we, one of the world’s biggest energy exporter, start having a fuel crunch 2.5 weeks into a war when even the Chinese and the Japanese, who are the biggest buyer of Iran oil, aren’t panicking as much?

Will they call an emergency right before Easter? I have a feeling they would put off until after

I vaguely recall the SA Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis on Saturday night on ABC’s SA election coverage saying that there was actually more fuel in Australia than before the Iran war kicked off and this entire fuel shortage debacle has come about because of fuel anxiety and panic buying, no doubt fueled by the media about the fuel crisis. Koutsantonis has said this was an entirely “demand-side” issue.

Is there any truth to that or is it Koutsantonis running cover for Albo and federal Labor?

I figure all the fuel shipment cancelations and deferrals don’t help in the intermediate term though.

Lockdown with 5km driving radius except if you’re visiting a CBD cafe incoming

The Government could force fuel retailers to stop gouging us yesterday if they had any spine — or indeed weren’t in the pocket of business. Fuel retailers are charging you and I three dollars for fuel __that they already bought at pre-war prices__. The Laberal® government duopoly exists to protect business profits while placating the population.

  12. This had better be a zoom meeting. If anyone is getting on a plane for this they should be ripped a new one by the media

Aside from barring fuel deliveries to businesses at certain times, I don’t see how rationing the public can work? Regular customers can just leap-frog between stations, while Psycho customers will go in and threaten the attendants when they don’t restart the pump.

Unless the police are finally going to police? After enough incidents? Or some security company is about to get a fat contract to place guards at every one?

  14. Yeah we’re straight fucked unless we cut a deal with China basically. Maybe India, but everyone else needs their oil now.

  15. Mandate WFH. Tell the business lobby to get fucked.

Put in a volume limit at the bowsers.

Raise export taxes to appropriate levels.

    Tax the corporations.

  16. Human-Warning-1840 on

I think WFH mandate will be last resort. It would open a new can of worms for businesses. It gives people more arguments to say, in crisis it’s ok to work from home but in general it’s not, so we want wfh back on more days. Just my opinion

Talking to a farming family this morning.

They’ve just had a diesel delivery, $3.50/L they usually pay below retail, here retail is $3.15 at the moment.

They’ve straight out said, we just won’t plant.

They can’t get fertilisers, diesel prices mean no profit, so we’ll just sit it out & keep our cows fed. There’s a much bigger problem here than having to pay $3/L for petrol.

    Stockpile winter grown vege seeds.
There’s people where we are doomsday prepping with vege patches and preserved foods.

Mandate work from home, scrap the LCT for EVs entirely, federalise grants for Solar panels on rooftops. Tax the fucking multinationals properly.

  19. Lost_Tumbleweed_5669 on

They need to make WFH mandatory for all call centre work, office work etc just to start.

I noticed this morning between 7am and 9am on the Hume Highway at Casula a lot less cars. Are commuters starting to take public transport? It felt like peak hour during the Xmas-New Year break.

  21. I really, really feel like we need a concrete response to this that goes beyond just reassuring the populous.

This government has an undisputed majority that is almost definitely safe for the next election, it’s *okay* for them to rock the boat a bit to address a national crisis.

  22. Businesses saw how difficult it was to get people to come back into the office after COVID and will do anything they can to make sure mass WFH never happens again.

  23. People are fucking morons. The roads in Adelaide are packed and servos have line ups, it’s like everyone is doubling-down on shithouse behaviour

  24. I drive an EV so I’m not directly exposed to this.

Is it really that bad out there? I see prices are pretty insane (309 for diesel), but are people really running out of fuel?

Is there a genuine concern we’re going to run out of fuel or need to start rationing it?

  25. didntseethat-coming on

All petrol stations are selling SO much petrol. I know multiple people who work in stations and they are SO busy! That’s why stations are running out. Not because they aren’t getting more deliveries, because people are being really silly and buying more than they need.
Don’t forget to stock up on toilet paper when you pay for the petrol.
Be sensible y’all , don’t be part of the problem 😩

  26. I wonder how popular electric vehicles will become once this has blown over, especially electric trucks (which are a lot more viable in the current year than many people realise).
