“A busy legislative program has impacted the bill’s introduction to parliament and there is no current confirmed timing,” the email reads.”

So in short, they (the State Government) claim to be too busy to bother prioritising this. How pathetic.

I don’t understand this. It would be incredibly popular, a very easy slam dunk in terms of gaining favour from the public. What’s stopping them?

This way the crime rates wouldn’t increase, less policy, less statistics, less noise, too much money for them to spend on animals, they don’t care about the environment, endangered animals nor pets, surprising? Not at all

Absolute shit cunts.

This is actually disgusting. I can see why they’ve shelved it. Every red neck farmer will start bitching even more than they already do about red tape or some shit. These laws were about basic decency and apparently to hard.
I urge people to read the news article linked in the guardian one. A man was given no prison for beating two dogs with a metal pole. Apparently his suffering is more important because the rest of the community made a point he’s worse than garbage.
I think this might have made putting the animal justice party at the top of my upper house ticket an easy one.
“But, the judge said, Martinaj, his wife and twin daughters had been “subjected to a campaign of abuse” from his community, with masked figures smashing up his car, threats on social media, an arson attack on his property and abusive graffiti.
“I consider the punishment inflicted upon you and your family is appalling,” Judge Manova said.”

Labor refuse to prioritise any environmental or animal welfare protections, they’ve been such a fucking disappointment.

“Sufficient time for parliamentary consideration is needed due to the size and complexity of the bill, and its intersection with other legislation. The 2026 parliament calendar has fewer sitting days than usual due to the November election.”
Sounds like it will likely be back on the agenda but not til next year. It’s a far more complex bill than just “hurt an animal go to jail” and before we know it Parliament will be shut down for the election. Just off the top of my head you’ve got the hunting and farming industries who would likely need to be considered and stuff written to allow industry to operate. Like can hunting still be a pastime in designated areas, can sick animals be put down on a farm, can you still shoot pest animals that are coming in to hurt your crop or your animals etc etc

Our animal cruelty laws are so shit. The guy that lives in the house behind me has a dog, it’s in a small area in the backyard, alone all day, no shelter, he leaves it out when it’s raining even. Often he’ll come home and the dog is STILL outside all alone.
Guess what? This isn’t considered cruelty or neglect. Nothing can be done about it.
