A traditional vanilla slice has icing sugar. Icing on top is a travesty.

Oh man. I’d be so hard up deciding which to eat, I’d just eat both.

I tried a vanilla slice and it’s extremely messy it’s like I had dandruff while eating it. I’ll stick to my cheesecake.

I prefer vanilla slice with icing personally but nice picks!

Pedantic hat on: a lot of things beat them tbh but they have their place.
Same as I enjoy the occasional suburban or country Chinese restaurant. Identical selection everywhere, no innovation, nothing spectacularly skilled or pushing boundaries, just good solid comfort food. And there’s nothing wrong with that.
I have a soft spot for Neenish tarts, from childhood. Only if they have real cream though, that mock cream has a gluggy mouthfeel that feels like your tongue has been coated in lard.

I like those vanilla slices much better than the small yellow engine mount looking things with the passionfruit icing, the icing is disgusting.

Most of the good old fashioned Aussie bakeries I remember growing up were run by good old fashioned Vietnamese bakers.

Bakeries around the world definitely beat Aussie bakeries lol especially the “good old fashioned” ones

I’ve learned from my local that there are actually 2 types of vanilla slice. The rank yellow custard one with icing on top (usually pink) and then the far superior French Vanilla. Flaky pastry, icing sugar and lush thick not yellow not gluggy custard.
