In the early morning hours of March 28, 1975, one of the most difficult tragedies in the history of Croatian healthcare occurred. A fire broke out in the gynecology department of the “Dr. Zdravko Kučić” hospital in Rijeka, in which 25 newborn babies lost their lives.
The tragedy marked many families forever. One of the mothers, Zlata Petešić, recalled the loss of her daughter Jadranka years later in an interview for Novi list:
“I nursed my little Jadranka only once and lost her in a terrible accident. She was a big baby, weighing 4,060 grams, 55 centimeters long, a beautiful, healthy baby. I was her mother for only one day. I gave birth to her on March 26, that sad and tragic year of 1975, at 11 am. The fire broke out the next night, around three in the morning, on Good Friday.”
