Why is it always cafes? They are not more reliant on deliveries than shops or bakeries or kebab vans etc are.

  2. “Temporary” will become permanent if they find that the surcharge doesn’t affect their sales

  3. I manage a place out in the hills, I’m interested to see the weekend to come with how badly this has hit the consumer. This cafe is having a laugh though to be fair.

I gave it a sniff, and it smells like profiteering!

Oi Newscorp, there’s ripe outrage/low-hanging fruit right here…

Genuine question – is this because their suppliers have increased pricing, so they’re passing it on? Or because it costs their staff more $$ in fuel to get to work?

  6. I ordered some stuff online the other day and genuinely felt bad for the subcontracting postie who delivered it at such a massive increase to fuel cost but no change in postage cost.

  7. Eh, seems reasonable.

A lot of deliveries are being halted and/or increasing prices. Depending on the venue, profits can be very thin I hear, but take that with a grain of salt, I don’t own a cafe.

Discretionary purchase. Pack a sandwich and take a flask / drink bottle.

These petrol prices are a great opportunity for me to finally start giving intermittent fasting a go

Lot of people talking with no understanding of what’s going on in our industry.

Basically every supplier has decided to add surcharges of at least 5% on deliveries which is rightfully fair as they need fuel to function as a business and we need their orders to do the same. Costs fluctuate and it’s better to be transparent than to just raise all prices up yet again like we have to do with our constant booze tax increases two times a year, insurance companies who have increased their fees exponentially for at least the last 6ish years and so on and so as I’m sure you’ve read consistently.

I run a venue in North Melbourne, we neither charge weekend surcharges or add any other surcharges because we are a tiny team and just absorb the costs so our small suburb/community can continue to have a place to drink affordable beers for as long as this nightmare continues but eventually we will have to follow suit. But hey we can all just stay home, drink our coffees and beers in our living rooms and just be miserable on the internet as an alternative I suppose

The media really haven’t interviewed enough cafe owners about Trump’s war and the fuel situation.

  12. mehriban0229 on

Why do people assume cafes are easily able to absorb these costs? I know so many owners that earn less than 50k a year trying to pay their staff on time.

I find Reddit fascinating when it comes to this shit! Half of you refuse to acknowledge the sheer pain in the ass it is to run a cafe… and most of the time it’s a labour of love! But then the same half then crack the shits completely when cafes close up!!

    Support local businesses people!

At least it’s a surcharge because it can come off. If they bump up the menu prices it’s less likely to come down

  15. SandWitchBastardChef on

So we should just reprint our menus with the new prices and say nothing.

I went to a cafe on the weekend and there was a 5% fuel surcharge. Not mentioned anywhere on the menu and you only realised when you went to pay at the counter after the meal and saw the sign.

  17. Considering that wholesale suppliers increased their (already existing) fuel surcharges a couple of weeks ago this pretty fair.
Small hospitality businesses are already running on tight margins and really have no choice except to pass some of the cost on.

  18. I already am paying too much for fuel to get there… if I see any of these surcharges, I’m out. It’s that simple.

  19. Anxious_Audience_743 on

Hospitality has been trying to introduce tipping culture with forced surcharges for years now and it’s working. Credit card surcharges so that customers can pay their banking fees, weekend/holiday surcharges so that customers can pay their employees the mandated awards, and now fuel…? It’s difficult to support local and small businesses when they do shit like this

Can we not lump all cafes in Melbourne in the same boat? I do understand that some places are doing it. That’s fine. Up to them. A 1% surcharge is really not much but i get that on a world where are seemi gly bombarded with surcharges, it can seem opportunistic. Cafe margins are already so low that They cannot simply absorb constant price rises and “temporary”surcharges so it has to be passed on. I understand the issue of you not being given the option to pay it but that’s just the way the world works . FFucking SSupermarkets who are profiteering billions of dollars off our failing economy will also start slapping a fuel surcharge on OR they will probably just charge more FOR EVERY SINGLE GROCERY ITEM and there’s butt fuck all we can do about it when they start doing that so let’s not compare cafes to supermarkets. I know there are some Cunt cafe owners but there are also heaps of really good ones who I would happily pay an extra 1% for to have them cook my breakfast and make my coffee. If ANY business is doing something we dont like We can always walk out and fo somewhere else!

  21. My work (a wholesale food supplier – we supply cafes and kebab shops etc) has began charging a fuel levy of $3.50 per delivery as of today. We have a fleet of refrigerated Fusos and a quarter of a tank cost me a bit over $100 on Friday. Small trucks but they get thirsty and it was really adding up.

  22. Just pop all the prices up 20c or whatever is needed. These type of things just piss people off.

  23. Old_Bird4748 on

Funny how the only industry that does even a weekend surcharge are cafes.
You go to a furniture shop on a weekend? No surcharge.
You go to a servo? No surcharge for weekends.
Public transport costs LESS on weekends.

  24. Mountain_Bend_6949 on

If a small business can’t absorb the small 1% surcharge they are putting onto customers, it’s pretty clear they weren’t doing well before. That’s not necessarily on them, but a pretty good indication they were already on the rocks
