It’s their responsibility to check that your identification is genuine. If they’re having trouble checking interstate digital ID then it’s reasonable for them to not accept it.
They’ll get in more strife for letting someone in with a fake ID than they will for refusing entry to someone with a digital ID from another state.
Seems reasonable to me

I didn’t know digital identity cards were a thing. Where is that?

Venues have the right to refuse entry for any reason other than those covered by anti discrimination legislation.

It is very difficult and inconvenient to properly verify a Digital ID when you don’t have the corresponding verify App. It might as well be a doctored photo.
The sign seems indicate that they are seeing a large number of fake Digital IDs, so have decided to reject them. This is lawful when it is an Interstate ID that is being offered.
If only there was some kind of government-backed ID system that verifies who we say we are while preserving our privacy.

Trying to think of whether there is a way to validate digital IDs of any state without downloading each states app, don’t think there is.
In general, it’s a design flaw in the system as most people will only be bothered if it’s your own state and you can validate it without downloading new apps.

Private premises. They can refuse service/entry for almost any reason they want. Not being able to verify ID is a legitimate concern for them.

Licenced premises in Australia have the right to refuse service and entry to anyone. If management are unable to verify the validity of an ID they have the right to refuse entry and service.
I used to work in bars and bottleshops. I’ve had my share of IDs I’ve needed verification on, and I’ve spotted about 50 fakes.
However, lumping everyone with a specific ID in the auto refuse basket is a bit rude.

Why would it not be legal ?

Their pub, their rules.
According to the Bunnings lawsuit on ai cameras, long as it’s posted what’s happening before you enter, it’s legal, as entering a premises is considered accepting any terms and conditions stipulated by the premises owner at the door.
It’s only illegal if they deny you at the bar after asking for it and there’s no forewarning.
You a not allowed to bring in a schnitty and beer from another pub with a staffie under your under your arm as a 14 year old with a fake id. Rules are rules.

A license premise can refuse service for any reason. And they dont even need to tell you why, atleast here they explain their reasoning. Source – ex pub manager

Most are usually issued with the card regardless. I don’t have a digital id that I use I have the app and that’s about all it is used for. I use my physical licence for everything.

There is no national standard for verifying digital id’s so it sounds perfectly reasonable to only support local ones.

I would imagine so.
Afaik it is the venue’s responsibility to ensure everyone is in compliance.
It is on the public to prove it to the venue.
If they’re not convinced by an interstate digital ID, especially if they’ve had a high number of fakes, then this seems fine. Appropriate even.

NSW Digital IDs have a qr code to scan at a RSL type clubs. I assume it would be the same at nightclubs and you cannot screenshot it from memory.

The thing that I hate about this is there is no transparency as what happens to the stored ID. Data breaches are rife and I am not comfortable giving this info to some random club

Sucks when you don’t actually have a physical licence anymore. In NSW you access your digital Id from the services nsw app and it has a ‘hologram’ when you move your phone left to right, so I’m not sure how it can be faked.
Fair enough if you don’t want to accept a screenshot or something but to not accept the licence on the app seems a bit outdated

In NSW, where I am the licensee, we can legally refuse service or entry to anyone we damn well want, for any reason we damn well want, provided it does not breach any anti-discrimination legislation.
In fact until less than 2 years ago interstate digital ID’s were not on the approved list of acceptable ID as described by the act, we literally could not legally accept them.
That being said, digital ID’s are a pain in the ass for fakes, and while I get where this licensee is coming from, just train your fucking staff. It’s not hard. If they aren’t paying attention to the digital ones, they aren’t paying attention to the physical ones either, so the staff are the risk, not the customer.

Which state was this in
Yes.
Could be? I had someone flag my QLD digital ID as not accepted for use in the ACT.
I would imagine that it depends on where you are, what digital ID you’re using, and what state/territory it’s issued in. [Here’s](https://www.youi.com.au/you-connect/articles-and-guides/digital-drivers-licences-what-are-the-rules-this-holiday-season) a helpful guide to get you started.
