Heidelberg, Frankfurt, Rothenburg ob der Taube, Koblenz, Köln, Mainz. Most places are reachable from frankfurt as centre. If you wanna go climbing, a really specific place is Felsenmeer, a bit complicated to reach but somewhat close to Frankfurt.

are you going to be based in a specific city and do short trips from there, or just travelling around?

    4. How long are you staying in Germany? That could help make a more defined list.
      In general:
Heidelberg, köln, Hamburg, rothenburg on der tauber, Bamberg, Würzburg, Munich

Dresden and Nuremberg were our favorites

So far, we’ve visited Berlin, Dresden, Rothenburg Ob der Tauber, Nuremberg, and Munich. Berlin is great if you’re a WWII history nerd (like myself)

So many recommemdations for cities – but do not forget our lovely nature!

      – the Maare in Rhineland-Paletinate
      – the Teufelsschlucht in west german
      – a Mosel trip through the Weinberge (= vine mountains along the river)
      – Partnach Klamm in Bavaria
      – the Alps in Bavaria
      – the Sächsische Schweiz
      – the Wattenmeer at the north german sea coast
      – the “Harzer Schmalspurbahn”, aka an old train that goes through the Harz (a Harry Potter like coal train going through a mountain-ish area in middle germany)

Sächsische Schweiz if you like nature and mountains. But I think Berlin, Dresden or Hamburg are the best
