      Damn, I had no idea there was a group called the NEW IRA… I thought that was over. When I was a kid, it was all news about ETA and the IRA… and that group from Germany whose name I’ve forgotten…

      The ‘New IRA’ has claimed responsibility for a proxy bomb attack targeting a Co Armagh police station earlier this week.

      The New IRA has claimed responsibility for an attempted proxy bomb attack targeting a Northern Ireland police station earlier this week.

      A pizza delivery driver was forced at gunpoint to take the bomb to the police station. He was able to alert those in the station to the deadly device.

      The device was described as ‘crude and viable’. PSNI chief constable said ‘cowards’ were behind the attack and it was a reminder of the past.

      Mr Boutcher said the incident is “likely to have been a sad attempt to appear relevant ahead of planned dissident Republican parades over Easter”.

      The incident was condemned by political leaders across Northern Ireland.

      Mr Boutcher told the policing board on Thursday that investigation into the attack is ongoing but “there is little doubt that dissident Republicans were responsible”.

      “The only thing these people are interested in is themselves and their own egos,” he said.

      “They are irrelevant to today’s communities in Northern Ireland.

      “I want to pay particular tribute to the courageous delivery driver who alerted officers to the threat, and ask that people consider the contrast between the cowards that perpetrated this and that delivery driver and all those countless people in our society who repeatedly stand up against such unsupported acts of terrorism or acts of intimidation.

      “There is no place in a democratic society for such criminals and I appeal to anyone with any information whatsoever to come forward and tell us what they know, tell us who was involved before these idiots cause some harm.

      “They do not deserve anyone’s protection or support.”

      Hi there. I’m from Lurgan. Specifically, I grew up in the neighbourhood this attack originated from.

      More specifically, further, my aunt is in witness protection for testifying in court about the apparent leader of the NIRA who is also from this neighbourhood. She’s estranged from us and we don’t agree or believe her story… For what it’s worth for anyone from here reading my comment.

      This neighbourhood, Kilwilkie, has always been a staunch IRA stronghold. Doesn’t necessarily matter which flavour – PIRA, CIRA, RIRA, even OIRA have always been popular here as have other Irish republican groups like the INLA or Saoradh.

      That being said, today’s Kilwilkie is a far cry from the Kilwilkie of past when I was growing up in the 90s, even less so from the Kilwilkie further in the past. Today it’s quite dead, quiet, and believe it or not peaceful. The fact this has happens is quite surprising due to this. Most of the folk so inclined to act on this level have since aged out of being militantly politically active, Gen-Zers couldn’t give a shit about it, millennials here mostly now have families, responsibilities, and jobs. This attack isn’t indicative of Kilwilkie today, most folk would be against this shit happening in this day and age… Even if there are a few sympathetic ones who remain.

      Those who are active or sympathetic are usually older men who have never moved on, who recruit teenagers and young men who are vulnerable in one way or the other. Which is what happened my childhood friend in this neighborhood (before he moved to Craigavon) – JP Wooton, who is in prison for life for murdering a cop on apparently the orders of the CIRA.

      The NIRA these days are mostly concerned with local turf wars, in Lurgan and Kilwilkie it is specifically with *The Firm* a cross community drug dealing gang.

      Seems counter productive, even if you ignore the immorality of the actions themselves. If the nationalists are the ones who restart the violence, wouldn’t that just tank support for independence?

      That makes no sense. Ireland held a referendum to amend it’s constitutional claim on Northern Ireland. And the UK agreed to let the people of Northern Ireland decide on their future whenever they choose. So who are the bombers claiming to speak for and what more could they achieve than what already exists?

      There is no scenario where a bombing advances Irish Republicanism or reunification. It can only serve to make those things less palatable. And everyone has known that since 1998. Maybe there are people who disagree with the Belfast/Good Friday agreement, but it doesn’t make sense for them to think they can force the UK or Ireland into something more than ‘hold a vote and we’ll respect it’.

      I’m eager to see who gets caught for this because it’s a bit weird for someone to claim to do something for a purpose while knowing it would achieve the opposite. And in the name of a nation that held a referendum to reject that purpose. And to wait 28 years to violently express disagreement with a negotiated settlement that could achieve that purpose.

      I know there are morons out there but this attack is so stupid and so counterproductive that it’s fishier than microwaved fish in the office kitchen.
