Found at 8pm and went for multiple walks around the complex, no mama or any other possums around anywhere, so baby sat with me until 11pm when i finished work and we went to AEC together (called RSPCA and also a wildlife rescue first because i wasnt sure how long they can be away from mamas but they said it would be fine for a few hours)

Thank you for 1) taking care of this lovely baby and 2) having the same accent as me and scaring me because I genuinely heard my own voice

I didn’t know the Australian Electoral Commission looked after baby possums haha

This time of year a lot of the joeys from the previous breeding season get booted out to make room for this year’s babies. April and May is when they start to leave home for the first time – we’re right in the thick of the breeding seasons, so mums often want to get rid of the freeloaders so she’s not taking care of two babies. You’ll often see what looks like very small joeys out on their own, but often they’ll be more like teenagers or young adults who can technically fend for themselves but often look very small and miserable and can be mistaken for lost joeys in need of rescue.

I’m glad you intervened with this guy, he does look on the small side. But for other folks reading this, lost idiot teenager possums can usually be safely relocated from carparks like this to a nearby tree. Even for little dudes, their mum is generally not going to be too far off and will be able to find their kid easier if they’re safe off the ground.

Wait a minute has that tiny creature got a spider on its back?! Is the kid playing ‘mum’ with the spider?!

This warms my heart so much. I have a soft spot for the little fellas. I see far too many of them dead on the roads 😣

The government doesn’t want you to know this, but possums on the ground are free and you can take them home. I have 458 possums.

I should probably add the context that this was last night, lil baby stayed with me in my jacket until the end of my shift. Dropped him off at the AEC on my way home and gave them my contact details but havent heard anything, i asked what usually happens to the babies and the lady said apparently the someone from the zoo comes to pick them up! So fingers crossed he’s doin okay, there were also 3 other baby possums already at the vet when i showed up, so atleast he had friends!
