  1. Nope, as much as i like Canada atm, this is a long-term bad idea.

I’m all for close partnership as much as possible, but the European Union shall stay European, mainly because we dont know for example how Canada will look like in 10years, and if something goes wrong then someone with bad intentions could be sabotaging the European Union from overseas.

Coming from a Canadian, I’m against it. It would cause more problems for Canada. Adding another level of government would make issues like Western alienation and Quebec worse and many would see Brussels as having too much control. I would rather see closer relations with the EU.

Canada should be an external partner inside the free market / free movement of ppl.

Yes! Common values matter the most and Canada definitely has healthy core values. 🇨🇦+🇪🇺 Stronger together

It would not work as a full EU member. Canada isn’t giving up control over its currency anytime soon, losing the ability to value it is a massively powerful economic tool.

Canada has somewhat similar laws to the EU but things operate differently here. We are harmonizing things like recognizing EU safety standards for equipment and vehicles. But we play loose with law enforcement and rules in general. Canada has a lot more freedoms and it is not a nanny state. We lean towards less laws overall. We don’t need stickers warning not to run a gas powered generator indoors. We just assume some basic levels of intelligence and we like it that way. It is a great filter that improves the average intelligence level by thinning the herd.

But Canada loves the EU would absolutely support a much closer working and immigration relationship. We consider you guys to be extended family.

  6. I’d only be in favour if there is overwhelming support in Canada.

Maybe they could join the EFTA with Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, and Liechtenstein. They would get the Schengen Area border-free travel and the European Single Market, while remaining non-EU members.

We could see how that goes and take it from there.

As a Dutchman we still owe you bunch of Maple leaf loving weirdo’s, so I’m for it.

Stop panicking, Canada will not join the EU, several countries have been waiting for years to join, and the selection criteria are becoming more and more rigorous. In particular, there is the issue of the euro, which will prevent many countries from joining, because the EU is no longer so conciliatory on this issue.

That being said, more closness with the EU is quite possible, Canada has a border with Denmark and France what’s more, so it’s not that far from a neighbor.

The only way the European Union survives in the long run is by fostering a sense of common European identity. This would be a strategic mistake.

Better is a brand new transatlantic union based on most of the EU rules

But with a major difference compared to the current EU.

Members must accept that all decisions are made with a qualified majority and that no member states have a veto right anymore.

A qualified majority must also be able to freeze or even kick out member states when they are not following the rules. Then this bullshit of an Orban type can no longer exist.

Every new member must choose between three packages, from loose cooperation, mediate membership and close membership.

Each package has advantages such as more or less financial support and more or less autonomy in foreign policy, taxes, immigration and things like that.

  11. I think the EU and Canada should definitely have deeper relations. But I am against further enlarging the EU until we sort out all the issues we have

well, in EU is a bit odd, but I’m all for free trade, free movement. I love me some Canadians in Sweden, I have never met anyone from Canada I didn’t like.

  13. As a Canadian living in Germany, it simply will not happen, even though im in favor of it.

I could potentially see some type of economic agreement. Something similar to Norway and Switzerland.

  14. Weird-Profession4122 on

I would love to welcome Canada in the European Union they are our best allied ever . And we still own the Canadian a lot for what they did in 44 and 45 for Europe

  15. I’m a huge fan of the EU and Canada but this makes no sense whatsoever. Geography is important. The trading rules of the EU wouldn’t work at all for Canada.

It would be great to have free trade and freedom of movement and various other things, but we should do that with separate treaties and agreements.

  16. Does this include Eurovision?

Seriously though, it seems like Canada is kind of far away for this to be practical

Would it mean that Canadian citizens and PR holders can go to Europe and work? 🤔 Are you sure you want that?

  17. Considering how tightly connected to the US economy Canada is, it wouldn’t ever possibly be able to align itself with EU rules without massively compromising an already difficult trading relationship with the states, which is economically and geopolitically much more important to them.

    Co-operation is a possibility, joining really isn’t.

  18. RedLemonSlice on

I’m OK for Canada to be Norway 2.0
Single market participation, movement of people and defense block.

  19. Sarcastic-Potato on

Having Canada join the union doesn’t really make sense – also it would move the EU border to the US border – not sure we want that.

But let them join the EFTA – I’m all for closer economic and social ties with our Canadian brothers and sisters

  20. I can’t see how this is supposed to work. They are not european, they are too far away from Europe, their economic system has a completely different structure compared to the EU member countries, they have different standards and having a land border with the US could cause significant diplomatic and security problems.

  21. As a French who immigrated to Canada, please, let us in, Canadian dollars are worth nothing and we’ve got plenty of maple syrup for you guys.

  22. Why are people wasting people’s time with this crap? Canada is not part of Europe and will never be. Its like saying that a hospital could be franchised as a McDonald’s. I get the point they’re trying to make, but it’s just dumb.

  23. Queasy_Bluebird1585 on

Do it. UK gets kick up the arse to rejoin. These people are our friends.

  24. It doesn’t make sense to be honest. The Canadian economy is so heavily tied to the US one along with the movement of goods and people between the two nations. It’s the same reason the UK will most likely rejoin the EU in the future – it’s all about proximity.

  25. Internal-Cobbler9140 on

Just call it the No Donald’s union.

“But, but, Donald Tusk is in it!”

No Donald **’s**, we’re allowed one.

  26. Technical-Leave-9235 on

No… no… no… – Eurovision first – only then can they join the EU. These things must be done in the right way.
