The first crater: Integrity, named for their spacecraft.

The second: Carroll, named for Commander Wiseman's late wife who passed from cancer. It was a really sweet and emotional moment with the crew circling him in comfort as he got a little choked up with the request.

NASA mission control concurred with both requests. Here's the video, moment starts at 4:00.

Just after breaking the record for distance from Earth, the Artemis II Crew makes a special request to name two lunar craters.

Naming a crater after his late wife while literally orbiting the moon… I’m not crying, the ISS just flew into my eye.

  2. OMG they were all hugging-I’m really choked up! If Zero gravity could end up being a step toward reducing the speed that cancer cells grow and becomes a cancer treatment someday it means even more.

Stupid sand storm, at this time of year, at this time of day, in this part of the country, localized entirely within my living room?!

  4. Beautiful moment.

Is it known if Wiseman was aware of this beforehand, or if the rest of the crew decided to do it for him? I’ve seen things hinting at the latter but nothing concrete. Beautiful either way.

  5. You could hear his voice cracking as they made the requests, and then came the group hug and eye wiping. So sweet and wholesome. Watching this mission has continued to be the dose of hope and beauty that I think the world has especially needed lately.

Actually was barely holding it together hearing him say that. Hardest fight of my life to hold back tears lol

  7. Balling like a baby from the Jim Lovell message and then this. So much emotion with this crew. Love them all.

Genuine question: I thought that the IAU (not NASA) is in charge of naming craters and other features on the moon. Does this mean that if the request is granted, only the US will use this nomenclature, or does NASA then forward the request to the IAU?

Full on crying. And you know who thought a creator should be named after him. I’m sure we’ll hear about it.

Hey, at least the US is allowed to do ONE cool thing. Hopefully this can get people to look up more.

  11. Thats one of the most human moments I can remember seeing. Communal solidarity, empathy and support for a lost loved one, in the midst of extreme adventure and exploration fuelled by curiosity. All the best things humanity has to offer the universe.

Integrity is a fitting name. America needs some integrity now more than ever.

Lame. Lunar craters ought to be named after scientists, explorers, and philosophers. Traditions need to be upheld.
