“Get them all in there and set the place on fire,” a user wrote on X.

Why hide these racist fuckers names?

Nothing wrong with a little India, but paying to make monocultural hubs in a time that we need social cohesion doesn’t sit right with me.

The racism is wrong either way.

Edit: I was wrong, ethnic enclave is an exaggeration.

this will actually get people to finally go to docklands lmao. this is a win

  4. No to racism and also no to deliberately planned ethnic enclaves which will only increase racism in the long term.

I don’t get it, wasn’t there already like a little india type setup in dandenong that wasn’t doing so well? Why not focus on consolidation what’s already there than trying to make something brand new? I guess it’s as people say melbourne city council is trying to get more people into the CBD but people realised the CBD is over priced, and overcrowded and too much of hassle to get to that they’ve seen a decline in people visiting.

A lot of nothing in the article

Only important bit in whole article is

Consultation on the plan has involved 15 community organisations and associations, the City of Melbourne said.

Scoping for the precinct has begun and recommendations will be brought to council for consideration in mid-2026.

So the racism was comments on Facebook and Instagram?
And somehow this warrants a headline that implies that there is racist pushback from the general Australian public.

I absolutely love this idea and im so saddened (but not surprised) at the racism being hurled around. I don’t know if I absolutely love the ABC repeating it in the article to be honest.

I really hope it becomes like Harris Park in Sydney, with street vendors and music and lots of happy people proving people with these dumb miserable views wrong.

Little India in Singapore is a genuine rubbish tip, a stark contrast to the rest of the country. Given how efficient and clean Singapore is compared to Australia, I don’t have high hopes for this. I’m getting major ‘square peg in a round hole’ vibes. But hey, anything for votes these days.

  10. **Everyone:** Docklands is dead! I’d actually go there if it was full of great Indian food!

**Reality, once built:** Let’s check out Little India. Docklands? Pfft … fuck that.

Lots of mentions of ‘enclaves’ but I don’t recall too much complaining when it was announced the building of the ‘Jewish quarter’ in Elsternwick. Government is kicking in over $7M for that compared to $1.5M for Little India.

People complain about how shit Docklands is, then when there’s something proposed to try and improve it, all of a sudden it’s a big issue.

  12. I can’t understand how Pauline Hanson hates people of Indian and Chinese origin.

Shows us how PHON is polling real time on social media, unfortunately.

I for one would love to have a little India. Indian food and culture is fantastic. It’s not like the rest of us Aussies are perfect.

I would like to have all the racists brought together and take Darryl Philbin out to lunch. Just to see what they’re missing.

It does seem to be something that is being pushed onto the community instead of something that starts its life organically.

I like the idea, but I can imagine the restaurants being pretty expensive given the overheads of operating in that area and that’s not going to be a great option in a city with a lot of pretty good and reasonably priced Indian food options available.

  16. Why can’t people just embrace diversity with all its challenges? It’s easy to resort to tribalism but in the long run, it’s a miserable and flawed position to take when we live in one of the most multicultural countries in the world.

Our Indian community are a huge part of Melbourne and the resistance to this idea doesn’t seem to be coming from the right places. I welcome it and hope to see it eventuate.

  17. There are so many Indians in Melbourne; and they are particularly concentrated in certain areas, and there are lots of Indian restaurants.

Why does taxpayer/ratepayer money need to be spent on kicking Indian culture along, as opposed to any other group’s culture?

There’s actually already a Little India in Dandenong. Why are they adamant about putting a Little India where no one wants to go?

  19. It seems strange to have a planned Indian themed village in an area where it’s not culturally significant. You can just go to a suburb with a high density of Indian population and eat the food there

  20. dazzamattica on

If the ABC are going to write the racist crap they should put a bit of effort in to researching the actual name of the person that posted it. But more importantly I hope there’s some Indian sweet shops

  21. Half the shops there are Indian anyway, so I don’t see how this is going to change anything.
Failure from the get go and a waste of tax payer money.

  22. AngrehPossum on

Melbourne North of LaTrobe st should be Little Korea. It kinda already is. Let’s make it Bulgolgi central? mashisoyo?

  23. If enough Indian restaurants open within a small area this will decrease the cost of Indian food from market over saturation. I see this as a complete win.
