      France and Germany can’t even agree on developing a joint fighter aircraft. Yet Sanchez thinks European countries will agree to hand over control of their ground forces to a joint command?

      I will have some of what he is smoking.

      At a minimum it seems like there should be at 2-3 standard set across the whole continent not the 17 it is now. then you can get to 1 single army in the future.

      Would cut costs massively by standardization and reduction of soldiers while also boost unity with other members.

      And it would also make it easier to develop new systems when the entire military is one body instead of multiple ones.

      Easy for Spain to say when you don’t invest in your own military and don’t support Ukraine. Lets the rest pay for their own security and interests.

      EU army talk is completely nonsensical unless the EU is federalized.

      This is especially apparent with the issue of military procurement and budgets.

      No, this idea of EU army is dead. EU countries can barely manage their own, how do you think if 27 start to decide …

      More cooperation outside of NATO for sure.

      The EU should have its own NATO, having a single army for so many countries with different languages would be logistically impossible

      Militarily the EU should first and foremost build out a common command structure with a few sub structures that could act more independently in an operational sense. One central org for procurement and contracting purposes that standardizes common use equipment (drones, fighters, software, intelligence and recon, comms, etc.) would be amazing. The expertese is already there to get this done it’s just that at this moment in time it’s all scattered and highly dependent on NATO (i.e. USA) command structures.

      At least this has been said openly- and not by just anyone, but by the prime minister of a pretty big and important EU country. 

      So the rest of the top politicians will have to find a way to deal with it and react. 

      And maybe soon we’ll see a compromise that allows for the creation of a mobile European military force that can act rapidly- while still preserving national sovereignty within EU member states

      Too many US bootlickers in the EU for anything truly meaningful to come out of this.

      The US Empire is in decline, but Independence Day for Europe won’t arrive anytime soon. Not with today’s leadership.

      Germany and Poland are already gearing up, not just talking. Germany and Netherlands even provide a template for a pan-European army merger with their unified corps.

      If Sanchez would actually believe in what he says, and not just make feel good statements for PR, he would push for Spain catching up in military spending to Germany, Poland, France, and others, as the national armies will ultimately be the foundation of any EU army.

      However, he really wants others to foot the bill of the initial prep (and thus bear the financial risk) while claiming the moral high ground of having *talked* about it.

      Sanchez is symbolic of our weakness. Lots of good talk, little willingness to take action, especially under financial risk.

      EU Army is already being prepared, and it’s France, Germany, Poland, Netherlands and the Scandis we should thank for.

      I did not expect Spain, of all states, to advocate for that.

      Spain looked like it has less influence in EU than Netherlands or Poland, despite having bigger economy and population than them. I wonder if it’s about to change or if Sanchez is just gonna make a few statements and stop

      The most realistic and efficient structure, in my opinion, would be the creation of a European Deterrence Force of 200.000 soldiers specialised in rapid deployment. In this scenario, every European (or EU) country would permanently have to commit roughly 10% of its personnel to such an initiative. Give it a very clear mission, its own military intelligence service (focused on Europe’s territorial integrity), an integrated Air Defence Network, and built a few modern large new dedicated European Deterrence Bases bases all over Europe and the Russians (or MAGA) will think twice about trying anything.

      I agree.

      We cannot rely on the US and even if we can, this moment shows that just one person can jeopordize an entire alliance.

      The US demonstrated they are an unreliable partner. The silver lining is that Europe is forced to become more independent.

      I hope Europe can build not only its own army, but also develop its own industry and create a network of satellites so it does not have to rely on US intelligence.

      Also we need to detach and develop our own IT and software solutions and in time move away from Microsoft, Amazon,Visa, Mastercard, etc.

      Trump is destroying an 80 year alliance and Americans don’t even realize it. In the end, both the US and Europe will be worse off, but I am sick and tired of being bullied by Trump.

      Enough is enough.
