we’ve entered the second week of strikes in Melbourne North. who knows if bins will be picked up this week. we’re praying they do!

how are people managing the bins? what do ppl think about the demands from dump truck staff?

  2. Surprising, I always thought garbos got paid pretty well.

Source: someone told me that one time.

Our garbage just got picked up here in Maribyrnong, but if they have a genuine reason to strike I’ll support them when they do.

  4. One thing we should have learnt from Covid is how so many things are much more important than suggested by the pay checks the people doing the work get. Teachers and healthcare staff are others.

Why we don’t tax corporations and the wealthy more is absurd.

    > Workers won’t empty wheelie bins in Darebin, Merri-bek and Hume and won’t issue parking fines in Yarra, Maribyrnong and Melbourne.

They’re still picking up residential bins, though the headline implies otherwise

  6. I recall when this happened in city of Melbourne. Things get extremely disgusting really quickly.

Just like everyone else, cost of living is skyrocketing for council workers too. They should not be going backwards in real terms and should be paid fairly for their work.

  7. This is part of larger protected industrial action taken by workers across multiple councils. Eight councils are taking action to disrupt services from libraries, rubbish collection, animal management and more. This is a part of Multi Employer Bargaining where the union workers across these councils have joined to negotiate together.

The main dispute is over pay which has effectively reduced by up to 12% over the last 5 years. While services are being disrupted a majority of the people taking action love the communities they serve and are hoping for a quick resolution to the disruptions

This is confusing. In Darebin council area, out entire street had no bins out. Then the truck came anyway. Not sure what is going on.
